Romans Puzzle! I have the solution! (The Puzzle that killed a campaign)

Aiiiaaiiaiaiiiaiii! I was just working on a solution involving diagonal sums and probabilities that had suddenly shown signs of making sense--and I just had to come here and post about it. Now that I know the real solution, I doubt my method would have worked, so I can quit poking away at it...

I dislike the lack of new material.

Defeated by puzzle - campaign over

IMO, the actual puzzles faced by the players only represent the puzzles faced by the characters--they do not have to be exactly what the characters are facing. For instance, a word puzzle in English would not necessarily translate into another language. When players face an English puzzle...

Defeated by puzzle - campaign over: Here is the offending puzzle!

Well, I happen to agree, there do seem to be a lot of pampered players on these boards. :p All this moaning and groaning, "Bad DM!" Just seems to me a lot of people are used to working with a net. Roman, I see no reason anywhere in this entire thread why your DM shouldn't keep this puzzle for...

Yarg. :\ What about some of my other questions, then? Also, did you try writing in each symbol only once? Perhaps it's a very simple function of "signing in," so to speak.

Not if that's what that particular campaign was all about. If the whole campaign was about getting past this puzzle, and the players somehow ignored all the clues, the characters deserve to die. It's just the end of those characters, not the end of the game of D&D forever. What's the problem...

    Exploding toads puzzle German scientists

Those would be some pretty big crows, to peck the livers out of Slaadi. Hmm. Do giant crows get Toughness?

I concur. Just as you can't decide whether this puzzle has an answer based on the information given, you can't decide whether a DM is good at his job based on one event. I can certainly envision a situation where I would do the exact same thing. Furthermore those who think the puzzle is...

I had a great idea? Uh-oh! I didn't count the squares very accurately, so I may be off. Same goes for the letters in the sentence. It was just something I thought of as I was concluding my previous post. :o Although, I have been claiming to be an idiot savant all my life...!

    Name My Dog!

Now just wait until he runs away, and you have to walk the streets calling for him to come to you. "Darth Vader! Here boy! Here Darth! Heeeeeeere, Vader, boy!" Yes. Yes, I think that will do nicely. Plus, when you're mad at him, you can call him Anakin.

Is it fun being an adult?

I'm 40, and it sucks being an adult. That's why I've never tried it. :p A couple of weeks ago, someone tried yelling at me, "Would the adult in the blue jacket please stop running through the aisles with scissors." I didn't realize they were talking to me, though, 'cause they said "adult."...

    Winnipeggers Unite

No way! Snow rules! Cold weather rocks! Hot weather sucks! I love it here because I love the weather. :p ...except in the summer. Then I love the basements of air conditioned high-rises. Algolei is 40 now (yeah! aging!), playing with two groups (a friend from high school and his...

Defeated by puzzle - campaign over: Here is the offending puzzle!

I noticed that when you split the whole puzzle up into 9 squares of 5x5, the borders seemed to be mirror images (and where the blanks are of course). That would have enabled us to fill in many of the blanks with the symbols they were supposed to be mirroring. But the pattern fails in those...

I thought it might be a map too, with mountains plains and water (forest might be a better thought than water). But without more info, I dismissed it for now and looked for patterns instead. I've singled out four of the symbols by highlighting and underlining them (two are in column 7, rows 5...

Are there any other clues? Is the original hand-drawn? If so, is that important--does the DM hand-draw everything, or would he have typed it if possible? Which way do the triangles point? What is the background of this puzzle? Where did you find it? What will be accomplished by solving it...

"realistic" giant insects in d20 System

Well, undead have no nervous systems, and that's covered by their d12 HD and bonus Toughness feat. They also have no Con scores. Since insects do still have nervous systems, and obviously need Con scores to live, perhaps giving them d10 HD and/or the bonus Toughness feat would suffice. (Note...
