    D&D 5E (2014) I hope this isn't 5E...(art that screams "not this, not this!")

My wife likes portrait art of attractive women who look classy. The sexiness dial would be set to implied, but then again fairies are ok to wear stuff all, and ninjas wear close fitting kit. I quite like art along the lines of this:

    Stat bumps from level increase

I've been toying with an idea that stat bumps could be the player 'rolling it' instead of a set +1 per X levels to however many stats. Something along the lines of rolling 4d6dl for a stat and if you beat it, it increases. Anybody thought of a developed system along these lines?

    Time to Heal

Nope, the healing non-weapon proficiency was in 2E. I think it cost a couple of slots. I'm 100% Ok with Cleric healing, but there should be a place for dressing wounds and recuperative care. If the non-bloodied half of a characters HPs represent stamina, luck etc... There is plenty of scope...

    Time to Heal

Where does the heal skill come into this? I means it is fairly obvious that this skill is pretty much the answer to every character having access to healing. The Cleric should just be better with it. Make the heal skill actually heal and we're good to go with or without a Cleric in the party.

If 4d6dl is the baseline, what's the PB/Array?

I agree HowandWhy99, without knowing the modifier values and point buy weighting - I can't get my answer! A case of wait & see methinks. I feel that the original 4E default array or the Essentials one may be harbingers of what's to come.

If 4d6dl is the baseline, what's the PB/Array?

As the title, if 4d6dl is the D&D Next baseline, what's the equivalent Point buy & Array? Point Buy is customizable so I'd imagine the flexibility would create a slight discount compared to a default array. I'm aware this wasn't the case in 3E/4E, so maybe I'm off with the fairies with this one?

Henches, Cohorts, and Donkeyhorses in 5e

3E had the whole shebang for the price of a feat, and boy was it powerful if you let it. Also time consuming. Self restraint was the key to an enjoyable experience. My paladin had his necromancer older sister follow him around and craft the odd magic item. The keep was populated by a militia...

Of all the complaints about 3.x systems... do you people actually allow this stuff ?

Yup, it happened. Summoned monsters bogged down fights, as did henchmen. Buff, scry teleport, then rest. Rope trick for endless rests. Spell caster dominance. Dispel magics flying every decent fight with a patchwork of buffs stripped away and 20 mins recalculating. Spell buff spreadsheets...

    Should point buy be discouraged?

I agree with this approach. I would like to have 3 different players be able to choose to roll, use point buy, and use an array, and all 3 be in the same ball park. Prior to this, the DM led group would have decided on the power level of the campaign, which would have equally toggled each...

    Should point buy be discouraged?

I don't think point buy should be discouraged, as that approach will defeat the point of D&D next. Rather a series of equivalent systems will be offered with players picking the one they want. I'm happy to leave the details to the professionals and pay them for the job well done.

    D&D 5E (2014) Hopes for the 5E Fighter

Things I liked from 2E/3E was the fighter having to make important decisions over: Mounted or foot? Armour type worn? Range or melee? Weapon style? To weapon specialize? I liked how a lot of this was decided early and could be developed additionally throughout the levels. Some kind of 1st...

    CR for a Meatshield

Not enough info here. It's got 4 times the durability of a Hill Giant, but does half the damage. CR9 is ok, but I would run the XP reward numbers to see if it would give significantly more or less than you'd expect.

    Striking a balance...

From a DM perspective, I am not at all surprised the melee touch attack spell started a round of nerfing. Treat with care the touch AC, there was a reason it didn't survive into 4E. Is it so integral to the character in any case? Probably not. I would have negotiated a mitigated nerf and kept...

Rule of Three 14 NOV 2011...

I'm not sure if you agree with one of my positions or not? I agree there are 100 different strikers out there, in guises of defender, leader, controller and... striker. They're very popular I know. There are even ways for non-strikers to act like strikers, again because they're very popular...

Rule of Three 14 NOV 2011...

Yep, not a fan of the overly popular striker concept. I think the other 3 roles should pretty much bash it over and take its stuff. Doesn't make much sense that a fighter isn't a 'striker' either. Am I to believe that the fighter dude brought up on martial warfare is less lethal than the sneaky...

Rolling for stats. Need some advice

I rolled about 20 sets of arrays using 4d6dl and then ranked them into tiers. I selected the broadest tier where the bottom array is comparable to the top one and then present these to my players. The players in turn then get the option to take one of these arrays, roll the best of 2 arrays...

    Paladin Ranged Attacks?

In this scenario I've found the defender can still be useful by presenting themselves to draw fire and providing cover to less armoured allies in the open. The odd extra basic attack does add up eventually too.

    Paladin Ranged Attacks?

Niche protection has been taken too far in some cases in 4E as the paladin's ranged options highlight. Basically the str based paladin is doing ranged basic attacks with a d6 weapon and the cha paladin is limited to range 5 implement powers. There's the odd power or option that helps but by and...

    Mearls: Augmenting the core

I really like where Mearls is coming from. It's like he's casting the net wide and far to capture the core elements of 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th editions with a holistic framework. I liked 2E simplicity but plenty of those rules were really clunky. I won't go into details. It would be really nice if...
