Most Important Part of a RPG

Ding ding ding!! And the winner is.... Crothian! If you meant other than the people playing the game, then I'd have to say the core combat/action rules. They influence the way that people play the game. They cen enable Timmy the Power Gamer, or they can provide a basis for sound playing. They...

    Share you worst campaign meltdown

No, the problem was the evil characters. They cause problems in many campaigns, and I have banned them. :p

When the magic starts to fade

Just have everybody show up for the next game with a new character. If he didn't get the message before then, he will at that point. Really, this does smack of video-game style play. Unlimited lives, locked in characters, you could just force the confrontation and tell him why you're all...

Help! I need a character idea, STAT! Also, a minor rant on being a tad burned out.

On burn-out in general (the numbers game version of burnout): D20 lends itself to Uber-Buffed characters with no real background or personality that just run around killing things. Sorry, it does. As do several other game systems. But not all D&D games are run as numbers games. Get with the...

Okay, almost my entire party has gone evil, now what?

You. as the GM, failed. You knew there was someone that felt this way in the group, and alignment changes in-game don't "just happen" to the entire party. It did not have to come to this point, you made it go there. So suck it up and tell the person who doesn't play evil. My recommendation...

PKing between PCs; do you allow it?

I have allowed it exactly once, after many warnings to the character who was clearly going to die from it that they needed to knock it off. I'm not certain that even with a good, story-driven reason I would ever allow it again. I do not allow evil PCs, and I frown upon CN - which is "do whatever...

    Share you worst campaign meltdown

I've only ever had one meltdown. I allowed three players from another group to join our table even though we really didn't have room. They had played with the same group for so long that they were basically inbred. One of them (a gnome) found a relic of the Dwarves and tried to keep it to...

    Share you worst campaign meltdown

Blame the GM for this one. The plane is likely to blow up with the way the rules are set, the GM needs to liberally interpret the results (I've had this happen two of five times I've run the Egg), and the resultant explosion doesn't have to kill...

What non-d20 books do you have at your gaming table?

A ton. I've used stuff from HM, C&C, and even Earthdawn in the games. Lots of old AD&D stuff too.

Options by default: on or off?

Agreed. I do not allow many races to be paladins.

Options by default: on or off?

When starting to plan a campaign I turn everything off. I then turn on only the few things that make sense for the world, and after that convincing me is a task, but not impossible. I actually think there are too many options in the game. I don't need a prestige class for nosepicker, and I...

You are in charge of WOTC.......

Not to thread-jack, but do you know how many people said that when 3.5 came out? And how many of them are now playing 3.5? When they release 4.0, people will move. Become disgruntled, but they'll move.

    d&d EDUCATION

(Pat owns both of my favorite FLGS's) The stores are at www.gnomegames.com, I think he has a "Games in Education" link on the homepage, but I don't recall for certain. Otherwise, email him (the address is on the homepage, IIRC), he doesn't mind talking about it AFAIK, we've discussed it more...

You are in charge of WOTC.......

    - I would make a single 1E/2E version of the game and sell it. A single game does not suit all tastes, why ignore a market segment? - I would second the recommended "electronic support division" they're going to need it. - Ways to bring new players to the games lines need to be explored...

    What's this guy's story?

That's funny, my wife of 9 1/2 wonderful years is teh uber-geek and looked dead sexy in her cheerleader uniform and still is :D. Some guys are just lucky, I guess.

How to write good GM notes

I have a three-step system. In-game, detailed notes, and overviews. Here's how I do it. I run a lot of games (5 pretty regular ones), so I had to get efficient :D Using 3x5 sticky notes and notepads, I track happenings in the game - things that I thought up along the way, and things that...

    What's this guy's story?

I'm a 39 year old man whose ponytail is nicely balanced by a receding hairline :D I grew up in an Air Force family with four kids, and decided to be the black sheep - did four years in the Army straight out of high-school. Spent some time as an Xray Tech while paying for college (thanks Uncle...

    Fantasy D20 -- PDF Sales Continue to Slow . . .

This fits my gaming worlds. In order to insure an enjoyable experience for all, my default answer is "no". I only allow stuff I'm familiar with and I'm busy, so it's rare I let something from a third party publisher into the campaigns. I buy a lot myself, but don't allow much of it.

    Fantasy D20 -- PDF Sales Continue to Slow . . .

For me, you hit the nail on the head. If I can stand in my FLGS and flip through the book, I get a real preview with the stuff that interests me in it, and I can support my FLGS I'm going to. That will win every time over buying something I basically know nothing about from a company I know...
