Help! Advice needed on how to game with my friend who is a jerk.

That's good news! I hope that things get all worked out.

Pathfinder 1E Rules Question: Pathfinder diviner wizard asleep during an ambush

To me, it seems like the ability, in this situation, is very much open to interpretation, so your call was fine. I personally would have ruled the other way.

so how often do you go above 10th level?

Almost all of my more recent D&D gaming has been above level 10. We rarely start a campaign below level 6, and most go to the upper 30s or lower 40s.

D&D 5E (2014) All classes should be broad enough to be split into subclasses

Some of us think that four jars is more than enough...? Personally, I would be happier with only three jars. Physical Butt-kicker, Arcane Butt-kicker, and Divine Butt-kicker.

Do you use a computer when playing?

I prefer to have a computer at (not on) the table when playing or DMing. I do not often need to look at anything for reference when playing or running a game, but when I do, I like it to be in a lightweight electronic format, rather than a heavy paper one. If I was playing with a group that...

Death by Infelicitas - Is it acceptable?

I had a character die after making only a single roll... for his entire adventuring career. It was a first level wizard for whom I rolled poorly on Initiative, and who was subsequently killed by a charging orc. On the other end of the spectrum, I've had a high level fighter die due to a roll...

    Mutants and Masterminds... fantasy?

I have played in, but not run, three fantasy games using M&M 2e. All three were very successful. A couple of things that I would probably do if I were to run such a game... Limit alternate form characters to no more than two alternate forms. This actually came from a character that I played...

What reasons do people in your groups give for not wanting to GM?

A few of the reasons I've given for not running, for the times when I'm not running have been... "I don't feel like it." "You run something." and... "Shut up."

MMO terms and tabletop, anyone completely ANNOYED by this?

Most of the MMORPG terms don't bother me that much, but I sure to HATE it when someone says they are going to 'roll a new toon'. I am not sure why, but it sure does raise the urge to kill. The other one that I am pretty un-fond of is pally. My favorite thing to do when someone uses one of...

    Mechanical Combat Roleplaying Rewards

I like the combo move idea, I say give it a shot and see if it has the desired effect. I might be inclined to limit that to one combo move per scene (once among all the players, rather than once for each player) but you can try it out more often and then scale back if necessary.

Rope Trick VS Discern Location... Rope Trick wins!!!

I would go a bit farther and say that you learn the name of the rope trick's caster, in lieu of some other somewhat more arbitrary identifier (i.e. Bob's rope trick).

DMs - What is your point buy method?

I allow my players to assign any number between 3 and 18 to their abilities.

Do people in your games actually use "builds"

I use 'builds' for characters primarily because it takes me about 10 minutes to come up with a character, and for the next hour after that, I have nothing to do but wait for the other players to fill in the mechanics for their characters, so in that time I can figure out what mechanics I want to...

Scouting ahead and splitting the party

Skip that part. "The rogue comes back, this is what he discovered. What do you do?" or.. "The rogue has not returned in some time. What do you do?"

Where do you meet to play?

In the two games that I'm in at the moment, we meet at one of the player's homes. Games that I have participated in previously have met in various places, mostly in one of the player's homes, but also - at the game store, in a church, in an office-building, in an outdoor structure at a park, in...

Star Wars: Chasing the Stars! (Updated: 6/30/05)

A game revived after six years must have been a heck of a good time. I look forward to reading about it. In other news, it is good to see a post from The Shadow.

    Feats That Shouldn’t Be Feats

I agree with pretty much everything listed so far... Here's what I do with some of them... Heighten Spell / Spell Mastery - I hadn't really considered this before, primarily because spellcasters don't need any help. Both of these feats are taken only very very rarely in games that I run...

Search Skill and Taking 20:House Rule, no taking 20 on search checks

Although imaria's solution could conceivably lead to the taking 20 simply taking up more time... as in... <player> I take 20 to search this 5-foot square. <DM> You find nothing. <player> I rest for a day. <DM> um... okay... <player> I take 20 to search the next 5-foot square. <DM> You've got...

Realism vs. Believability and the Design of HPs, Powers and Other Things

I think that one big problem with the 'Hit Points as abstract concept' issue is that the way hit points are defined by the writers of the game are often not at all the way that hit points are described during gameplay. If I am running a fight between a giant and a group of players, when I...

Killing a Wizard is Easy... if you know how.

That's a good point. Here's a brief summary on how the rules changes that I've detailed above were accepted by my own players... The attribute spread has been accepted happily, and only one of the players felt the urge to put 18 in every attribute. That player is a shameless and known...
