    Making your own DM screen

I went with vertical side panels and horizontal front ones. Hides my notes and still lets me see the battlemat. That aside some of the things I've included on my latest screen include; Grapple Summary Actions List and whether or not they provoke AoO's from PH p141 40 random names for when I'm...

    Grappling Rules...?

I gotta go with the keep them as is - Yes grapple can be nasty, but ever bull rush a PC of a cliff? They'll scream bloody murder about that as well. A PC needs to be capable of handling many situations so there will always be one trick opponents who don't suffer from that. The mechanics make...

    WWII Minis game?

The D&D minis are roughly 28mm, so the new A&A figs will be about half of the size. If you need 28mm WWII figs go to http://theminiaturespage.com/ there are literaly dozens of companies that make them.

    The Seven Cities of Gold

Its less about the metals and more about the wealth - how about silk? Spices, magic, temptations, knowlege, wisdom, even peace are all examples of things that people might aspire to have and thus make cities worth searching out.

    Someone to watch over me...

When I have houses built I have started putting up webcams, some hidden, so that the buyers can see the progress on their homes. But I do have to admit that I have used them to monitor contractors. One thing we discovered was hourly billing generally came in at least 25% lower when they knew...

Do you remember this dwarf book?

Kingdom of the Dwarves by Todd Walsh and illustrated by David Wenzel. It was put out by Centaur press (isbn 0-87818-017-6). For a rare change I'm posting from home and can actually check my library.

How much of your work-day is actually spent working?

I find about 3/4 of my work day is working if you count schmoozing with people working, but I spend at least a quarter of my "off" time working, so somewhere I hope it balances.

Poll: Would you pay for space to play?

I'm playing for a place much like that right now. By my estimation, it's about $30,000 of the house. I have seen this idea tried, both as a private enterpise and as a club. None of the businesses survived, but I know of a few clubs that were able to find cheap space and rely on a handful of...

    Pop can + chocolate = Fire (?)

Toothpaste works better than chocolate - we tried this a few weeks ago and it was amazing how well it worked.

Holding an NPC under threat of death

It varies - usually if the threatened person wins I still allow the threatening party an AoO. If not I allow the normal Coup de Grace - however I houseruled it takes the victim to -1 not instant death (damage aside) so there is time for intervention.

Holding an NPC under threat of death

I use an opposed reflex check with the improved initiative also counting. Successful Bluff check or other distraction for a +2 bonus.

How will guns change a D&D world?

There is no right answer. A major part of the problem is people hypothesyzing fairly advanced gunpowder weapons appearing out of nowhere (which is admmitedly quite possible in D&D). What I see as the question is would the weapons be developed in the first place. Most of the suggested firearms...

    Help! I need a hook.

Just make the PC's the troops the elves sent, a classic too few too late. The political implications could be fun. And throw in an NPC or two that can be a replacement PC if a PC dies.

How many arrows does your PC carry? And who keeps count?

Most of the time the PCs will have plenty of ammo, but during attrition scenarios I've been known to allocate round toothpicks to players based on the number of arrows each is carrying (usually 20). To shoot an arrow they must spend a toothpick - quick and easy.

    Naming dopplegangers

IMC I always treated dopplegangers as a type of living construct along the lines of a homonculus, and as such they are either given a name by their creator or referred to as so and so's changer. The first time a doppleganger keeps a form for a long time they tend to imprint upon that persona...

    30th level at 21

When using the episodic method mentioned above I find it helps if there is some interuption of the game itself, for example switching to another game system or DM, even if its just for a one shot. Alternatively if I don't want to disrupt things that much I'll often switch scenes and have the...

    Ravenloft - your experiences?

I loved this module. I still love it, and am constantly amazed at how many current players have never played it, but are terrified of the mere name. Thus when I run it this summer I'm using D20 past and setting it in 1930's Nazi Germany. With all of the Nazis running around the town the setting...

Limiting magic item creation without XP.

IMC I threw out xp expenditures and required the crafter to invest 1 (or rarely more) physical attribute points in each item, other than scrolls or potions. The point is regained if the item is destroyed. This has worked to keep proliferation from getting out of control without the PC crafters...

    Castles and DnD

The problem with being a defender is that your location is generally fixed. That being said, you would want protection, and a stone fortification is still better than most of the other options. The details are going to be determined by the expected foes, so the type of castle is still going to...
