    Temporary Hit Points

No. As you surmised properly, you'd lose one temporary HP from each spell for each HP of damage that you took. Because of this, it's simpler to just "flatten" all of the spells to one effect.

    Need new ECL workaround!!!!

(minor nitpick: average PC base ability score is 12, not 10.) You're right. A 1st level drow wizard is an easy mark. Which is why they need to rely on their natural gifts, or they simply won't survive. (a second nitpick: characters can drop or resume Spell Resistance as a free action...

    Need new ECL workaround!!!!

Almost forgot: A good way to offset those abilities, if you don't want them to be ECL, is to create a two-level prestige class that doesn't grant anything but the drow's expensive ablities (spell-like abiltiies, ability score increases, and spell resistance.)

    Need new ECL workaround!!!!

Well, what else do you suggest to offset four (?) unchecked ability score increases, Spell resistance, spell-like abilities, and greater-than-normal wealth? Remember that ECL is a measure of PC balance, not combat-effectiveness. IIRC drow are still 1 CR, which means (roughly) that they're as...

Thoughts on Prestige Classes and Feats

A big part of that is that feats are so limited. A 20th level character without any bonus feats only has six feats (and the most feat-heavy character, a human fighter, tops out at 18.) IMC, I allow characters to buy feats as "quarter levels." This lets them get powers that they want...

Thoughts on Prestige Classes and Feats

(Did you mean "instead", as in "rather than having a new class" or "in stead", aka "as the game goes on?" Oh, well.) Prestige classes are a formalization of a concept that predates AD&D, and a modestly good one. There is a certain expection of "better classes" that can only be taken after...

Non-CR based XP system from Unearthed Arcana

Why not just give Power Points (also in UA) for notable use of a character's abilities? i.e., a wizard tosses a fireball at the exact right moment and saves the party - the wizard gets a powerpoint.

When was the sword put out of use?

The invention of the Flintlock (circa 1600) made the firearm "better" than the archaic weapons it has come to replaced. Before then firearms certainly existed and were even used, but they weren't cheap enough to displace the lance, pike, or longbow, which piror to the flintlock were the...

    MP3 Help.

He didn't say that he encoded them; he said that he took them off the CD. There are a few CDs out there that are copy-protected against CD-ROMs--the audio tracks won't play. To keep complaints down, the record companies that do this often include a data trac that has the whole album as a...

    MP3 Help.

What version of Windows Media Player? Were the WMA files actually on the CD, or did you have a "record" program? As other folk have suggested, the EASIEST way is to download a MP3 encoding program, and use that directly. However, if your CD is copy-protected using one of about half a...

DMs who dislike using minis during combat?

This is why, when I decided to remove minis from my game, I added in a "Battle Tactics" skill that replaces the information lost by this abstraction.

    Druid wildshape and size

PCs don't lose any of their abilities at all, with the exception of a mouth to speak, when they wildshape or polymorph.

What Spells give the DM the most headache...

They shouldn't be annoying. Wish and Limited Wish have clearly defined limits, and Miracle is either "I want a free wish" or "do something random and take my XP." Some examples: "Poof - a man walks up to you. 'Mr.PC, I'm here to inform you that one million gold coins were found in an...

OFFICAL ERRATA: Hit points *DO NOT* change in polymorph

Maybe. WotC, even in their eratta, isn't clear. They removed the note from 3.0 -- does this mean that the rule is changed, or is it still the same odd rule that it was in 3.0?

OFFICAL ERRATA: Hit points *DO NOT* change in polymorph

Actually... I was of the opinion that the rule was annoying back in 3.0, too.--and, as such, I "house ruled" it. They removed the line in 3.5. "Hmm. Hey, looks like that house rule of mine, like so many others, was incorporated into the change." So, either they're incompetent in the...

OFFICAL ERRATA: Hit points *DO NOT* change in polymorph

*blink, blink* Your HP changes if you take Constitution damage. In a like vein, you gain bonus HP if you get a bonus to your constitution score. 3.5 Polymorph is a heck of a rules-hack on the game, and is IMO symptematic of a greater problem: inelegance in rules extension, brought about...

    non-spellcasting ranger?

It needs to be OGC so I can re-use it. Sure, I can write up my own variant, but I'd rather not have to fork any more than necessary--the setting already forks enough.

    D&D 3.x Casting Defensivly - 3.5 rules

    9th level NPC barbarian 8 / sorceror 1 (+8 base) with Weapon Focus (+1), 20 strength (+5), a +3 weapon (+3), a belt of giant strength +4 (+2), charging (+2) after casting True Strike (+20) while under the effect of Bless (+1) and Recitation (+2) and having higher ground (+1). That's +45...

    Free Overland mapper?

So, aside from Paint, the GIMP, and AutoRealm, what free programs are out there that will let me make an overland map for my campaign?

How many people here do actual magic? How do you do it?

Actually, "magick" or "majick" is an acceptable alternative spelling for the type of ritualized directed new-age prayer that most religious magicians practice. It's a deliberate change in spelling to differentiate their religion from mere prestidigitation. The alternate spelling also nicely...
