What is/are your most recent TTRPG purchase(s)?

I backed the Kickstarter for Kobold's Gamemaster's Guide, and bought the Phandelver campaign book when I saw a really good offer on Amazon. I see there's a GM Day sale on over at DM's Guild, which will be my cue to pick up some more Dark Sun PDFs. That's my only planned expenditure in this...

D&D 5E (2014) What are the highlights of D&D 5th edition for you?

In terms of product, Lost Mine of Phandelver is the only one. But it's a really playable version of the game, and while it's probably not my favourite, its simple popularity is a major boon.

    Is TTRPGing an "Expensive Hobby"

Provided you only ever buy the core rulebooks of the game you're actually playing, it's incredibly good value for money. Every book beyond that shifts the dial in the opposite direction though, since so many of them end up on the shelf unused... or get used and make your game actively worse.

Should a TTRPG have a singular Core Rulebook or more?

For any game other than D&D (and near-D&D games like Pathfinder and A5E), I'd argue that if you can't fit it in to a single 250ish-page book, you're probably doing something wrong. Actually, the same is true of D&D, but I give that a pass for tradition. That said, almost every additional book...

    D&D 5E (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

No. I'm running what is almost certainly my final campaign with my current group, and I have neither the time nor, honestly, the inclination to go find another group. So it may well be my final campaign ever. And with no game running, nor any prospect of one, there's no reason to buy (and so no...

D&D General The core monster lineup across all editions

Possibly. Although in the cases of the 81 and 83 Basic sets the designers knew that there was an Expert set coming to expand the roster. That being the case, they would* have cut down on the number of high-level monsters in the Basic set to those they felt they just couldn't live without. (I...

D&D General The core monster lineup across all editions

What sticks out to me is the inclusion of the three sets of Basic rules - that limits the list really sharply to the low end. Either adding the corresponding Expert rules, or omitting those from the requirements, but surely significantly expand the set? That said, I'm only surprised by one of...

D&D General You are given the reigns: what do you do?

I'm under no illusions that what I want from the game is what the market wants from the game. And I absolutely am not going to make a game other than the one I want. So I'd start by questioning the sanity of the person who hired me, and then I guess I'd clear my desk. :)

D&D General Official D&D In Decline. Source Hasbro.

Sorry, I misspoke - I didn't mean to imply that the two should match (!), only that an increase in searches should lead to some sort of increase in sales.

D&D General Official D&D In Decline. Source Hasbro.

Yes, but it did lead to a massive increase in searches for D&D. Which we were led to believe would lead to a corresponding increase in sales. But, yes, given the hopes pinned on the movie for growing the IP, it may well be considered a middling to huge disappointment within WotC, regardless of...

D&D General Official D&D In Decline. Source Hasbro.

On the other hand, it was the year when the movie came out and when there was a runaway success in video games. You'd expect the inevitable not-a-new-edition dip to be countered by the corresponding bumps from those two, at least partly. 2024 looks like it's going to be a much more interesting...

    Spoilers The Marvels (Spoilers)

We watched this the other night, and I'm also having a hard time understanding why it is such a comparative flop - we thoroughly enjoyed it. And, yes, I agree that Kamala Khan was the best thing in it, and that her series was very enjoyable.

Amazon has been sued due to introducing Ads

Yeah, that wouldn't be an issue. As it is, I was six months into an annual subscription when they brought this in. That said, I'm yet to actually see any ads, which probably shows just how much I use the streaming side of things.

    D&D 4E 4e Essentials as a new edition and 4e's longevity

Or I guess you just had each person use the rules from the PHB they had. There has always been a large constituency of casual gamers who just really don't care about the rules. Fair enough. My larger point, which seems to have become lost in all of this, is that there simply is no universally...

D&D General DMs...How do you end a campaign in a satisfying way?

I try to make that last session (or few sessions) a microcosm of the campaign as a whole - whatever the premise of the campaign was, that happens again. (So, you're lost in Ravenloft being played with by the Dark Powers, so in the last session you get trapped in an even more constrained realm...

    D&D 4E 4e Essentials as a new edition and 4e's longevity

I would expect that the people who used them together continued using the entirety of their PHBs, probably modified with that handy free conversion guide WotC produced - meaning that, yes, they'd have mixed sets of rules used at the same table. The extent to which 3.5e and 3.0e were...

    D&D 4E 4e Essentials as a new edition and 4e's longevity

Except that people could, and did, use the 3.5e books right alongside the 3.0e books. And, actually, they could and did use the 2nd Ed books right alongside the 1st Ed ones (and B/X and BECMI for that matter). Ultimately, there's no definition of what makes a new edition that will work for all...

    Your best live action Superman?

That's a really interesting question. I haven't seen Tyler Hoechlin except for cameos in Supergirl (and, again, CoIE), but have heard good things. But for me that makes it a toss up between Routh (he was good, shame about the film, and like @Dire Bare I very much enjoyed his take in CoIE)...

    Your best live action Superman?

Conversely, I'd say it doesn't, precisely because we don't see the full suit and cape - I'd argue that the last time we see him in Smallville is just before he suits up, and then the next time (in that same "Crisis on Infinite Earths" we had the Conroy-Wayne) is after he's stopped being...

    Your best live action Superman?

Point of Order: In the Batman thread, I noted that Conroy had played Bruce Wayne once in live action, and it was queried whether he'd ever suited up as Batman. In which case, I feel I should ask the same question about Tom Welling. Oh, and to answer the original question: Reeve is the yardstick...
