Dragon 416 and Dungeon 207 TOCs are up!

They've put out a call for more DL articles.

    Channel Divinity: Zehir

This isn't a D&D Next article, but I hope everyone enjoys my article.

    Songs of Sorcery

I really liked this article...while silly, I though the songs were fun (and not only because she used "On Wisconsin" as the basis for one of them), the advice was solid, and the alternate rewards were pretty interesting (to bring this back to D&D Next, I hope alternate rewards make it into the...

    Blue Dragons: Sand or Sea

I'd prefer that the blue dragon go back to being a desert-dweller. I never cared too much for the 4e change, though it was never that big of a deal for me.

    Is online play testing allowed?

It is, they just don't want you to post rules text through them.

Backgrounds, Specialties, and the other classes

I guess it depends on what unique things the D&D Next version of the other classes bring to the table.

D&D 3.x The New Playtest: Why return the failed 3e mechanics?

It's not really 3e BAB - it's a combination of a BAB-like mechanic and weapon proficiency bonus (at least for the weapon version). The D&D Next Toughness feat, while kind of bland IMO as feats go, is more effective than both the 3e and 4e version since it also grants you an additional hit dice...

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclass in 5E

On Twitter (I think it was on twitter, it may have been some other of social media, like the Reddit AMA), Mike Mearls said D&D Next multi-classing would be like 3e but informed by their experience with 4e hybrid classes. Thus, I'm guessing you can take a level in any class you want, but you...

Dungeon 204 - The Ecology of the Swordwing

Yeah, Mike did a great job; I particularly liked how he made the magic sword work like a hazard. Very nice.

Dungeon 204 - The Ecology of the Swordwing

I view swordwings as extremely powerful alien monsters that thankfully live in the remotest reaches of the Underdark; if they lived closer to civilization and if they weren't constantly distracted by their hoarding they'd be a dire threat (slaughtering entire cities is definitely in their wheel...

Dungeon 204 - The Ecology of the Swordwing

I didn't see a news thread for my article detailing the ecology of the swordwing. I though these monsters, which are new to 4e, were interesting conceptually and artistically since they were previewed in 2008, so I was glad to get a chance to expand upon them. I hope everyone enjoys it...

Hero Points / Action Points - Yay or Nay?

I voted sure, why not, as long as they're part of an optional module. However, in D&D Next, I think I'd use them in the following way: 1. They're a limited, daily resource that refresh after a long rest; I don't think I'd introduce a mechanism to gain more throughout the day. 2. When you...

    So, Attacks of Oppportunity?

I definitely don't want a return to 3e style attacks of opportunity, as I much prefer the more simplified 4e system. However, I'm leery of reintroducing movement-triggered OAs into the general rules, as I think they are one of the primary causes of combat slowdown. I'd rather they be limited...

D&D 5E (2014) How should combat maneuvers be handled in Next?

I think D&D Next should divide what we're calling "combat maneuvers" here into two categories: 1. The first category is a maneuver that anyone can attempt without specialized training, such as bull rushing, grappling, tripping, etc. These types of maneuvers would be adjudicated via a contest...

Playtest report - can 22 goblins defeat alcohol?

Intoxicated itself just needs one more bullet: casting spells should require a Constitution check (at disadvantage).

Legends and Lore April 2, 2012

I think they should just crib from Pathfinder and have three advancement tracks (fast, medium, and slow; use medium as the default assumption in most adventures). Flat math and less reliance on magic items should make this quite easy.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next is a crappy name.

I don't think WotC actually came up with D&D Next; I believe it started as a fan-created hashtag on twitter in response to WotC calling it the next iteration of the game.

Blog: Sneak Attack Vs. Backstab 3/28/12

I'm intrigued by his suggestions (hey I like choices!), though I would like to see a more concrete system before I come down one way or another. My main worry would be to make each choice roughly equal to one another, so the decision doesn't become an automatic no-brainer.

    Ability damage

I think that spells like cure light wounds should also be able to heal a limited amount of ability damage, especially Strength, Constitution, or Dexterity damage. IMO, hit points and this kind of ability damage are two ways of measuring physical damage (yes, I know that hit points have other...
