    D&D 5E (2014) What's your ideal Fighter damage ratio?

In other words, two evenly matched opponents could kill each other inside of 2 turns if they did maximum damage. That seems about right to me. And sure, Asmodeus' Avatar could be defeated by the greatest human hero in the world. But he would still be alive on his home plane -- so, somewhat...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's your ideal Fighter damage ratio?

Let's say the high level fighter is 25th level. Her strength is 20 natural because of ability level-ups and she has a strength enhancing pair of gauntlets that increase her strength to 25. I would like her bonuses to be equally divided between both of these. Right now, I'm toying with a few...

D&D 5E (2014) What Should the Maximum Level Be?

I'm hearing from most of you that you either don't want a cap or you want a cap between 20 and 30. I agree that 20 for natural ability scores for humanoids is a good number. And if we offer a magical bonus to ability in the range of +5 then that ability score becomes 25 with magic. Here are...

D&D 5E (2014) What Should the Maximum Level Be?

Thanks for the comments. I see that some players will ignore the caps and create 40th level characters with 40 intelligence. I'm cool with that. But for the core game, we'll need to set limits in order to determine other important elements of the game. Every edition had limits, they just weren't...

D&D 5E (2014) Dex mod tp damage when using ranged weapons: Please do away with.

Ah! So fighters should invest a bit in their dexterity training. An exposed eye has no armor and that crossbow bolt is seeking that eye.

D&D 5E (2014) Dex mod tp damage when using ranged weapons: Please do away with.

Here is a list of finesse weapons and why I think they should be dex based and not strength. Weaker characters never rely on their strength. They use lighter and thinner weapons focusing on critical exposed armor-less areas. Fighters can focus on strength-based bashing. A dagger can not be...

D&D 5E (2014) Dex mod tp damage when using ranged weapons: Please do away with.

This is a difference in our thinking. Part of this group is reasoning that when the character uses a crossbow that his dexterity allows him to cause greater damage by focusing on critical areas. Sure, blow darts need only do 1 damage. I currently set it at 1d4 just so a die could be rolled.

D&D 5E (2014) What Should the Maximum Level Be?

..not a survey because I'm asking for reasoning why. If we cap level, ability score and armor class at 20, the bonus spread is more noticeable. However, if the highest level is 20, that makes higher level monsters less challenging. If we cap level, ability and ac at 25, this seems to be a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Jeff's +5 Bonus Idea Good?

I read all your comments. I'd like to add that one of the reasons I think each bonus type should be +5 is that it is easier to remember. This is also my reasoning for maxing levels at 25 or 30, and ability scores at 25 or 30 -- easier to remember, makes the game seem more logical. Makes the game...

D&D 5E (2014) My Current Maneuver and Feat List (Needs Work)

Your "Dash" and "Precise Strike" are interesting directions. I like the idea of having advantage for damage rolls! Good one. Riposte, interesting. Gives me ideas.

D&D 5E (2014) A Hint of Elegance in the Latest Playtest

I could live with a large natural ability modifier either way. My idea of having a maximum bonus of +4 was completely rejected. But when raising that number to +5 based on other's suggestions on this forum, suddenly not much resistance.

D&D 5E (2014) Replace Martial Damage Bonus with Extra Attacks

I agree. You could double the attacks per turn at the highest levels and it would take care of the need to increase damage to reduce combat time quite nicely. For example, an 8th level character or monster would get 2 main attacks, 1 off-hand attack and 1 reaction. A 25th? or 30th? level...

    D&D 5E (2014) Jeff's +5 Bonus Idea Good?

While the max ability score of a humanoid is 20, the max ability score of a Storm Giant is Str 29(+9). I'm saying that the max strength of the strongest pc or npc would be str25(+5)

Shidaku, you think we should keep ability modifiers the same as they are now but keep other modifiers at a max of +5?

    D&D 5E (2014) Jeff's +5 Bonus Idea Good?

As for high level characters and monsters, Asmodeus would have AC25 25d12 hit dice in addition to having other skills like teleport back to his home plane to return again to fight even if he is struck down.

    D&D 5E (2014) Jeff's +5 Bonus Idea Good?

I've toyed with his idea and I think I've come up with something the designers were leaning toward. In the latest play-test, many of the bounded score and bonus numbers are hovering around 25. My system was a little strict and boring. But Jeff's numbers are metric and easier to remember. This...

D&D 5E (2014) A Hint of Elegance in the Latest Playtest

Situation could still be advantage and disadvantage with this to work. It would go down like this. lvl25(+5)+str25(+5)+feat+5+magic+5+advantage or disadvantage to hit. lvl25(+5)+str25(+5)+feat+5+magic+5 damage bonus.

D&D 5E (2014) A Hint of Elegance in the Latest Playtest

Here is what it would look like if we were to give a max of +5 bonus for each bonus type. max level 25 level / 5 = level mod +1 every 5 levels lvl25(+5) max ability 25 ability - 10 / 3 = ability mod +1 every 3 ability score points above 10 str25(+5) feats +1 trainning, +1 proficiency, +1...
