So it's finally happened? D&D reduced to board games...

And I think the real test of a company is that they make games that people like to play. If D&D evolved into something else that was fun, neat, and interesting then I would hardly be in a position to complain. :) I just don't want the sort of "paint by numbers" material that can show up in...

Rule-of-Three: New Weekly WotC Article! - Feb 14

I actually really like the vampire being implemented as a class and I like their idea of using mutli-classing rules to handle vampires who do magic or other stuff on the side.

basic differences in rules per edition

I have to agree that this is a concern. It's a very hard job to balance customization (so every fighter is different) and balance (so Jane doesn't rock while John barely rates as a side-kick). 4E introduced an effective solution, albeit one with downsides. Feats had a lot of undesirable...

Ever see a Strengh 18/00 rolled legitimately?

We had a time when we wanted to break from power gaming. I think we did 4d6 drop one. The player who got an 18 strength threw the percentile dice and it came up '00'. It was a very shocking turn as illegitimate exceptional strength had been a feature of previous game sessions. The overall...

    Survivabiliy

This being 3rd edition, the real issue is less the divine caster making it themselves; it's only one feat and CL 7. Now, imagine what happens if the divine caster gets access to Disintegrate in a serious way. There are a couple of ways that could happen . . .

D&D 4E [4E Players, mainly] Ever thought of defecting to Pathfinder?

I actually did the 4E to Pathfinder switch. The adventure paths were the key for me -- they are fun excursions and eliminated enough of the issues of game preparation that I was willing to give it a try. It has worked out quite well, so far.

    WotC: Re-issue older editions.

On the other hand, the Marvel and DC comics companies release some pretty expensive collectors items and fans seem to enjoy them. The market for a premium Superman statue, for example, is thin but I can't recall other fans complaining about the existence of a premium collectors item. The...

Pathfinder 1E Question for the Paizo folks regarding D&D's state of today

I would be surprised if that opinion changed. In most of the cahin bookstores (like Barne's and Noble), the D&D books are the "anchor" of the RPG section. Having a strong line to justify the existence of this section makes the possibility of other RPGs (mlost notably Pathfinder) being present...

Does the GM Need To Know the Rules?

I does badly if the Dm does not have a basic grasp of the rules system. But I am no pathfinder expert and I do okay (admittedly with tolerant players). It's aslo worth noting that there are a wdie variety of rules systems out there. Some have a lot of "lore" to know but very simple...

I am beginning to appreciate some of the design decisions of 4E.

I have used all of these tactics to make a high level 3.5 game work. But the major problem, for me, is when the party does something completely unexpected. I had a folder of pre-made NPCs for this reason . . . I also found that the tactical complexity of running a high level NPC made it...

    Sincere and unbiased.

I think you need to have a consensus among the group that they would like to accomplish the goals of the adventure path. All RPGS require buy-in between the parties and my current party is happy to treat the path as a puzzle to be sorted out. Not every 3.5 group I have DMed would have worked...

    Sincere and unbiased.

I have found the Adventure Paths to be a lifesaver as a Pathfinder DM. They make an enormous difference in the preparation time and tend to be callibrated to be fairly tough. [although I think my players may be sick of getting diseases in the current adventure . . . ]

    Star wars - which version?

My understandign with SAGA is that it is a pretty common house rule to ban taking Skill Focus: Use the Force until sixth or tenth level (this solves the issue with low level Jedi being way overpowered in force abilities). One thing I love about the Star Wars games (all 4 of them) is the whole...

    DDM Line Axed

Transaction costs. If you don't have a seller with a wide selection locally then you have to go to places like eBay or on-line retailers to pick out the minatures you want. My online merchant experiences have been mixed, I have been impressed with Amazon but smaller vendors have been a tad...

Ok, now i'm REALLY CONFUSED. AKA, do any of you think you know what WotC is doing?

I agree that the Boardgames are a really good idea for getting new players interested in the game. If nothing else, they reduce the fairly high cost to enter the hobby (although Eessential helped, the Ravenloft board game is, for a group, much less expensive than the basics from Essentials)...

WotC, really? No...really? You can't maintain a publishing schedule?

Is this a move towards counters?

I am beginning to appreciate some of the design decisions of 4E.

I also really like how they make the "look and feel" of each creature somewhat unique. Fighting Lloth feels very different than fighting Orcus. Dragons have some really interesing powers that make each type feel very unique (above and beyond the different types of breath weapon). The 4E rules...

    Edition Fatigue

I wonder if products like Ravenloft might help to fill this gap? It's not precisely an RPG but it does seem to bring many of the elements of 4E into a single session board game . . .

    Edition Fatigue

One thing to keep in mind is that the complexity of Settles of Catan is much lower than any edition of Dungeons and Dragons. For example, it does not require a referee in order to play. Nor is the rulebook (for settlers of Catan)on the order of hundreds of pages (as far as I know) whereas all...

The Role of the Wizard, or "How Come Billy Gets to Create a Demiplane?"

I still think most of this was due to an attempt to remove the weaknesses of various spells; which then led to this loss. In 1E, Fly is a 3rd level spell with no higher level alternatives. If it is dispelled the magic user falls. Teleport has a risk of instant death, even under the safest of...
