    What about the healing skill?

Given that skills itself should be an optional component, so that oldschool players could play without backgrounds and skills, how could the healing "action" (rolling wisdom to treat wounds, first aid) IN THIS CURRENT PLAYTEST work? Most of the mundane healing in the playtest is handled by the...

Rogue Idea: Trading Sneak Attack Damage for Opportunities

I like the features suggested (flanking strike, etc.). Fits the 5E style pretty well. Though I don't know yet if it's balanced to trade it for sneak attack. We might see something like flanking strike built into the higher level rogue, I kinda see it coming. :) -YRUSirius

    D&D 5E (2014) A traditionalist at heart, a NEW mechanic I desperately want from 5e.

I don't think this needs to be supported mechanically by the rules itself necessarily. It could be handled by the DM narratively. NPCs flee or warn them (Gandalf and the Balrog), they hear rumors beforehand (so they know that the demon they will encounter is the slayer of worlds etc). In...

    D&D 5E (2014) A Key Issue for 5e: Quick Character Generation

"Pro gamers" can generate their characters pretty quickly with experience, yes, but newbie gamers are slower. And why shouldn't you want to make it easier for them? -YRUSirius

    Character Generation Presentation

I vote for the 3.5 way: Give us an advancement table where we can see the class advancement and descriptions in paragraphs in the class description. You could put the theme feats into this table too, something like this: The Fighter (Level 1-20) Level XP Needed Class feature 1st...

    D&D 5E (2014) A Key Issue for 5e: Quick Character Generation

At higher levels you ask your DM, what magic items he might have already? A fair DM will look at the other characters and might work with you to give you some magic items. -YRUSirius

    D&D 5E (2014) A Key Issue for 5e: Quick Character Generation

Roll attributes. Chose race. Chose class. Chose background. Chose theme. Chose equipement. Note race, class, backround, theme features. Calculate hitpoint, attacks, AC, spells, etc. Seems pretty quick to me if you go all the way. -YRUSirius

How would you continue the design of the individual themes?

Balance limitations? If rings are very powerful? -YRUSirius

D&D 4E I would rather not have 4e combat "powers" in D&D Next

Or the basic fighter get's fighter surges and the complex fighter has to trade them in for specific maneuvers that do damage + something special. -YRUSirius

D&D 4E I would rather not have 4e combat "powers" in D&D Next

No need to be afraid of anything then. Maneuvers will be in a module. Just ignore them. :) -YRUSirius

How would you continue the design of the individual themes?

All the magic item creation feats are SO predestined to be a whole theme. :) Scribe Scrolls as the 1st feat. Brew Potions as the 2nd feat. Forge Wondrous Items and wands/rods as 3rd feat. Forge Magic Weapons as the 4th feat. Forge Rings as the 5th feat. Something like that. :) -YRUSirius

D&D 4E I would rather not have 4e combat "powers" in D&D Next

If I want to use 4E like combat powers, I believe there will be a game that will have them. Who are you to tell me how I should play my 5E game? -YRUSirius

D&D 4E I would rather not have 4e combat "powers" in D&D Next

Why do you want to take 4E combat powers from me? If you don't want to use them, then don't use them. Why do I have to do the same as you? Let me use 4E combat powers, you can use or not use what ever you want. Don't ruin my game. -YRUSirius (Btw: 4E combat power stuff will be in a module...

How would you continue the design of the individual themes?

I don't think that themes will grant access to skills, classes might (later levels or at level 1 like the rogue with its schemes). I believe that themes will only give access to feats. This way every mechanic gets it's clear 'delivery system'. I do think that advanced themes (prestige themes)...

How would you continue the design of the individual themes?

So let's get creative: How would you design the magic user's 5th level feat "Flourish"? It must be easy to handle. Flourish: Chose a signature spell (not a minor spell). If you cast this spell you either get advantage on the magic attack roll granted by the spell or your opponent gets...

How would you continue the design of the individual themes?

That excerpt is from April. In playtest terms that's a loooooong time. Bruce wrote in the new article that "as it stands currently right now in this iteration of the next d&d game" (phew), that you'll get a feat at 1st, 3rd, and 5th level, etc. This does seem to imply that there will be no feat...

How would you continue the design of the individual themes?

Whoops! Browser Settings Incompatible Boom! As it currently stands: characters will gain feats every other level. 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, etc. I think 5 feat themes (over 10 levels) seem to be a given now, they are going for a 20 level cap and are looking into advanced themes. Advanced themes at...
