[school] If I needed to decide what Network Operating System to use where would I go

Holy thread resurrection! That's a trick question. The answer is: whatever you're most comfortable supporting. If you know Windows, then a windows server is best for you. If you know linux, unix, solaris, openBSD, mac os or whatever, use that. It takes so much more time and effort to support a...

Sony Vaio notebook help... runs slow

I hadn't heard that, but you might want to check out PC Decrapifier. http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/home It removes all the nasty trial software and junk that the vendor crams in there. Run that after you install a fresh system.

Sony Vaio notebook help... runs slow

Yeah... You've probably got record numbers of viruses and spyware. Do you have anything on the computer you just can't afford to loose? Back it up, and reinstall Windows. Otherwise, you'll spend DAYS trying to get the thing working if it's really that slow. Just use your Sony restore CD and...

House rules designed to facilitate competence (and therefore fun) at lower levels

I'm not sure of the necessity of having additional rules to help out the players. Why not just use weaker monsters and easier traps? The extra rules serve as a crutch that will get taken away later and actually make the game slightly more complex for the unfamiliar player.

How to increase traffic to website

Yup. Find green and architecture news blogs/sites and see if you can submit some article on your site to them. You have to go beyond "hey, look at my cool site" and actually offer them content, like "here's a case study on a retrofitted green roof on a college campus in Minnesota." You might...

    MIC - Healing Belt errata?

Exactly. Think of it this way: You just got womped for 30 points of damage, you're badly wounded and your opponent is still standing in front of you, ready to hit you with an axe. Do you: a) Heal 2d8 and hope he doesn't kill you so you can get the maximum effect of the healing after combat is...

    MIC - Healing Belt errata?

It does not add to existing healing - it's on it's own, and allows you to heal others (or harm undead). A 1st level wand of CLW costs 750 gp, so maybe they were comparing the usefullness. The belt lets you heal more in one go, but the wand has no daily limit. It does seem low, but I don't...

    Threatening with a shield

I'd agree with pawsplay. While you are getting an AC bonus from the shield, you don't threaten with it, unless you have that one feat that says you can bash and keep your shield bonus, in which case I'd say you threaten with it all the time. But for most folks, it's either a shield or a weapon...

    Computer sound problem: please help

Right, so probably there's a problem with one of the programs that is trying to access the sound devices unsuccessfully, which is either Firefox or Flash.

    Computer sound problem: please help

Weird. What web browser are you using? Try a different one and see if it works there. IE, Firefox and Opera are all fine and should work with YouTube.

What will Vista do for me?

Yikes, you sound like I've seriously offended you somehow. It took me a couple of days to figure everything out, we're not talking dedicated study or research here. Just open the thing and start typing. You'll have to stop and look around the first few times, but weren't you poking around the...

What will Vista do for me?

Believe it or not, for most people it IS easier - once they LEARN it. It's like Dvorak keyboards. It makes no sense if you're used to something else, but once you learn the layout it's actually easy. Also, help is still there and it's an order of magnitude better than it ever was.

    Human Subtype - Level Adjustment?

With what you have there, I'd call it a strong +1, but perhaps change "immune to fear" to a +4 racial bonus to bring it a little more in line. You might also give them weapon familiarity with scimitars or whatever weapon you want them to use primarily. Personally, I'd lean towards using...

Technical Difficulties: Windows won't start up

The Recovery Console isn't usually useful unless you REALLY know what's going on. If you have a regular Windows install disk, you can install it again without deleting anything. You'll need to reinstall all your programs, but your data will be there and it will be functional again. If you have...

    Knowledge (Local) for humanoids

First, where did you find that particular DC? Second, I think it's safe to allow for a circumstance bonus for your own race. Third, on the other hand, I know lots of folks that don't know basic things like what to eat, how to wash themselves or clean up after themselves, so maybe it's not that...

    Knowledge (Local) for humanoids

Once I figured this out, I frequently take it. I had been assuming it was "knowledge (particular region)" for the longest time. It's far too useful not to have. It really should be named something else, like knowledge (culture) or (humanoids). I would say that the first example is actually a...

    OGL vs. non-OGL magazine

I read that a bit differently. It sounded to me like because they were going OGL, they could choose to include more 3rd party stuff in their game world. Of course, that probably contains a certain amount of spin, and at this point any 3rd party stuff at all is more than they used to. (3rd party...
