    D&D 5E (2014) Campaign defining magic item

Hey all, Inspired by a discussion in the Worst Spells thread (it’s a fun read), I got to thinking about magic items. Namely, the idea of letting the party find a powerful magical item at low levels; the equivalent of Bilbo finding the One Ring. My thought here is that by finding such a...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's the worst spell?

    Ain't that the truth!

    D&D 5E (2014) What's the worst spell?

Well, then I guess you shrug and accept that boring decisions will lead to boring outcomes, and never give them a fun item like that again. Giving out a fun and powerful item early on isn't going to work with all groups.

    D&D 5E (2014) Are you a cat person?

The Tabaxi speed boost should absolutely not be underestimated. I've got a player using one for a Valor Bard, and only his deliberately odd-ball combat methods (he likes using a Rapier and Whip, to imitate Indiana Jones) keep it restrained. The other players - especially the Aasimar - reckon...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's the worst spell?

I think Wish is now a great utility spell. For a 9th level slot - or, more interestingly, a Ring of Three Wishes - you can get any save-my-bacon spell you want. It makes the Ring the sort of thing that I think would be fun to give to a party at level 2; they'll always have that ace up their...

    D&D 5E (2014) Cleric's level 20 Divine Intervention stories/examples

I love the idea of Helm gazing down, and working out the least-effort-intensive way to aid. "It'll do", he says, having opened the floodgates the tiniest possible width to help his worshipper... One problem with the ability is that the Cleric list really lacks a big and impressive top-level...

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Hoard of the Dragon Queen" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

Firstly, your session sounds hilarious and fun, and I'm a little jealous of it. (My players had a Lizardfolk Barbarian, so recruited the Lizardfolk tribe to go and murder the Bullywugs, while they focused on the Cult. Took two sessions to clear the castle and the dungeon, while the Lizardfolk...

D&D 5E (2014) Sidelining Players- the Good, the Bad, the Ugly, and the Poll

This guy sounds incredible. Please ask him to come here and do an AMA! Back when I just started, I played with a 3.0 DM like this. He had a high level DMPC with multicoloured hair in a ponytail that accompanied the party and helped out with spells and whatnot. It was goofy even at the time...

    D&D 5E (2014) Cleric's level 20 Divine Intervention stories/examples

I think it is like Wish; the ability is worded in such a way that it isn't game breaking, but leaves the option open for the DM to break the game if (s)he wishes. So on this, the story provided by Greg Benage above is a perfectly acceptable use of the ability, and one that fits with its...

D&D 5E (2014) [AiME] Has anyone read/run Wilderland Adventures? Thoughts?

Thanks for that. Podcasts are not normally my thing, but I listened to it while walking the dog, and it was pretty informative. Unfortunately they were rather fixated on outlining the story and discussing its value for use in mainline D&D, rather than as a conversion of the One Ring material...

D&D 5E (2014) Chapter Three of Lost Mines of Phandelver is Frustrating

To be honest, this thread confuses me. Chapter three is the best part of Lost Mines! The players suddenly get the freedom to decide their own direction and path, in the light of quests given by people that they have a range of opinions towards. They have to collectively decide what to do, in...

D&D 5E (2014) [AiME] Has anyone read/run Wilderland Adventures? Thoughts?

Dear all, A simple question this time: has anyone read through, and possibly even started running, Wilderland Adventures for AiME? It's been out in PDF form for a while, even if the physical copies are still to be released. If you've had a look, what were your thoughts about it? Reviews are...

    D&D 5E (2014) What Makes a Good Urban Adventure?

I find that no player of a Fighter or Paladin will ever accept not wearing armour in any scene. The moment you ask them if they're wearing it, they get worried and afirm that they ALWAYS wear it. It can be a little tiresome, since if I've got a nefarious plan to take advantage of that I'm...

    D&D 5E (2014) Too Much Money

It's an interesting question. I read a blog post that someone shared on here last time this came up, which noted that the amount of gold in D&D treasure tables has remained the same since 1e, more or less, even as magic items have fluctuated wildly, but the actual reason for 1e having so much...

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic Items You'll Never Give Out

Paladin in my group got a Vorpal Sword at level 14 or so. He failed to roll a natural twenty for three levels, and was despairing of it. Then promptly decapitated three Goristos in a row. Damn that thing! Damn it to heck! :D In fairness though, it's a fun weapon, and definitely memorable.

D&D 5E (2014) Is it fair to cast save-or-suck spells on the players?

That's a good idea. Ironically the adventure I'm running did have a fairly complex description of how Vlaakith fights in combat, to aid the DM; it's just completely useless, due to the change in editions. (It starts with her casting a metamagic-enhanced Timestop and then following with six...

D&D 5E (2014) Is it fair to cast save-or-suck spells on the players?

Oh, of course. We even ruled it correctly for Forcecage on that exact reasoning; but I never remembered to apply it to Shapechange. I had a boss battle in my other group this week as well. Four level 5 characters against ten Bullywugs, Pharblex Spattergoo, and Dralmorrer Greyborn. I honestly...

D&D 5E (2014) Is it fair to cast save-or-suck spells on the players?

My understanding of Polymorph was that it would effectively be dispelled by the Antimagic Field, so I didn't want to use it until they were gone. This meant it was insanely hard to find an opportunity to use it; they could too easily counter it. Of course, the eventual neutering of the 9th level...

D&D 5E (2014) Is it fair to cast save-or-suck spells on the players?

If I did misjudge you, then apologies. Your first post ended with a line saying how you'd be 'disappointed, but not to the extent of ending a friendship' with how you imagined the fight had gone. The second post was an extended anecdote about a Lich fight (just like the one we're discussing...
