Is the Spiked Chain Fighter really that Cheesy?

If you think the spiked chain is so broken, then tell me why one of the most optimized lockdown builds uses a longspear. Honestly, lockdown builds allow tanks to actually meet their job description and keep the monsters away from the squishies. There is almost no incentive for a monster to...

Is the Spiked Chain Fighter really that Cheesy?

I think a lot of the "Spiked Chain is cheesy" sentiment comes from people looking at an optimal spiked chain build and comparing it to the non-optimized characters that frequent their campaigns. In this sense, I'd agree: the spiked chain build would be overpowered. However, so would most...

How would you fix the Paladin's Mark?

At the end of your (the Paladin's/Fighter's/Marker's) turn, if you are not in melee range of your marked creature, that creature is no longer marked by you. That work? :)

    6 players, 5 hours, 4th edition

Nitpick: aren't almost all units of measurement human-constructed and arbitrary? :) Perhaps "squares" is the D&D unit of measurement over stuff like feet or meters. It's certainly more convenient...

Homers and Haters Beware! Confirmation Bias Exists!

No, I've seen responses to reviews that looked like products of confirmation bias. For instance, people lauding one review as more credible than another because it fit better with their pre-existing views.

Homers and Haters Beware! Confirmation Bias Exists!

I thought homers were the super-optimistic fans of something, i.e. a sports team?

Homers and Haters Beware! Confirmation Bias Exists!

Confirmation Bias I think I've seen a few cases around where this seems to have happened. Just keep in mind that confirmation bias exists and can influence your thoughts (*tinfoil*). Just because, say, a review is gloomy/glowy does not mean it's (un)biased.

Camping: It does a body good!

On the point of abstract HP, it seems like writers like R.A. Salvatore have been using it since forever to describe his combats. For instance, in one of Drizzt's fights against Artemis, the only hits before the winning attack (more of a disarming attack, I think?) were minor scratches and a...

    My take.

You were doing well until that last sentence. Just because 3.5e is playable without too many houserules does not mean it does not have serious flaws, or that the release of a better ruleset is solely an economic decision. I see a TON of improvements to the game being made in 4e that I think...

    My take.

Well, if they print that line for every minion, then I suppose not. But with the former, you don't have to keep track of their HPs. It's simpler to use for a DM, and when it doesn't make sense, it's easily fixed. I guess it's not just paper space, but "mind space".

    My take.

I think the point of minions not having HP is why waste space printing an HP value that probably won't be needed? When it is needed, just put in something reasonable. If it's a minion vs. a PC/important NPC, the minion is going to die. If it's something like the bag of cats thing, either...

    Weapons, Wristbands, and Somatic business

If the cleric is holding only a Light Shield or Buckler, he can use that hand to manipulate the spell components. No dice for a Heavy Shield though.

    A Kensai's Signature Weapon

No, in #2 the weapon enhancement and the Kensai Signature Weapon bonus are in two separate buckets. So if the base weapon is a +3 weapon, and you want a crafter to add a Flaming enhancement to it, it'll cost you 14k even if your Kensai bonus added another +4 weapon bonus to it. That avoids...

    A Kensai's Signature Weapon

So right now there seems to be 3 interpretations of how the Signature Weapon ability works. 1) The Signature Weapon ability looks at the total weapon bonus of the weapon. Thus, a character with 4 levels of Kensai that designates a newly-crafted +3 Longsword as his Signature Weapon can raise it...

    A Kensai's Signature Weapon

What about games that end at those levels? Do you think it's realistic that the Kensai gets his end-game +10 weapon at level 11? Wait. That interpretation doesn't make any sense. So if a char with 3 levels of Kensai starts with a masterwork item, he can have a +3 weapon max, but if a char...

    A Kensai's Signature Weapon

What? It's not like you can't stop upgrading your weapon with cash after you start taking levels in Kensai. At level 11, a normal melee character could have a +4 weapon. Since 6 of those levels are in Kensai, under your interpretation you'd also add a +6 weapon bonus on top of that, for a +10...

    A Kensai's Signature Weapon

The problem is this is not balanced. Getting a +10 weapon at level 11 is simply overpowered, and is roughly the equivalent of tripling your WBL.
