D&D 3.x Do allies block ranged attacks in 3.5?

It's been a while since I've played 3.5 so I'm a little fuzzy. I seem to recall a rule in 3.5 saying that allies do not provide cover against your own ranged attacks (meaning, if an ally is standing between you and an enemy, he does not grant that enemy cover). Is this the case? If so, can...

    D&D 3.x 3.5- Multiple shots with a bow?

Hello! I recently joined a 3.5 D&D game, and an issue came up that the DM and I disagreed on. He made a ruling for the session, and we both agreed to research it in the meantime to find out whether this was correct. My character is 2nd level, and was using a bow. I fired once per round, and...

    Amusing/Un-Helpful Magic item idea help.

Not quite on topic, but you know how the Bestow Curse spell allows the caster to invent their own curses, so long as they are no more powerful than the examples given? Well, I never got to use it, but a Cleric character of mine invented his own curse in case he ever got really pissed off at a...

    Fice-Foot Step question

Sweet. Thanks! Like I said, I've been playing 4e for a while, and so the thought of getting a 5-foot step without having to spend an action seems crazy, no matter how many years I spent playing 3.x. Just a little version-confused, I guess!

Making an Attack Roll with Fireball?

It sounds like you've got it right. Normally, Fireball is an area attack, which doesn't require any roll on the part of the player (aside from a damage roll). However, Fireball itself is a special case (most likely as a holdover from earlier editions of D&D- Fireball is no more powerful than any...

    D&D 3.x List of all WotC-published 3e and 3.5 books?

Does anyone out there have (or know where I can find) a list of every 3rd and 3.5 edition book released by WotC? I'm looking to complete my collection, and I want to know which ones I'm missing. (If possible, please include campaign setting books as well, as I know I'm missing most of the...

    Fice-Foot Step question

Forgive my stupidity. It's been a long, long time since I've played 3.5 (moved on the 4e, and recently begun to miss 3.5) and there's one thing I can't seem to recall. If you take a Standard Action (say, casting a spell) and a non-move Move Action (like drawing a weapon) can you take a free...

    Readying a Silence Spell?

The easiest thing to do would be to, you know, move out of the Silence effect. As long as it's not cast directly on him (which would allow a save, thus making it close to useless) there's nothing stopping him from just moving out of the area and casting the rest of his spells normally.

    D&D 4E Holy Water in 4e?

While I agree with you, and you make a great argument, that view is unfortunately not supported by the rules. If you have weapon-based powers from your class, sure, you can use whatever ability score your class uses, but making a basic attack with a ranged weapon uses your dexterity modifier...

    D&D 4E Holy Water in 4e?

Because it's a ranged attack with a thrown weapon. I don't see why Paladins and Clerics (who will likely have their own, much more powerful Radiant powers) would even use Holy Water.

    D&D 4E Holy Water in 4e?

Wow. At first, I read this, and was like, "Uh, dude? Is that a typo or what?" And then, I was like, "Oh, I get it." And THEN, I was like, "Holy CRAP, that's awesome!" Good job. I just might be using this.

    Playing outside of encounters

All of the responses so far have been spot-on (particularly Amaroq's). I've got one thing to clarify, though: If the rogue wants to pick the lock, if there's nothing rushing him (no enemies around the corner, no damsel about to be sacrificed, no owner-of-the-chest watching him out of the corner...

    D&D 4E Holy Water in 4e?

Simple question. Does Holy Water exist in 4e? If so, what does it do? This was inspired by a similar thread (one about potions that help against conditions). During Keep on the Shadowfell, the players learned that they would very soon be fighting undead, and, while in town, one played (very...

In your opinion, what's the best way to make the players lose?

Thanks for all of the helpful replies, everyone! As it happens, I actually found a (very simple) solution to my own problem, but I'll definitely use some of your suggestions in future situations. Here's how I got it to work out, and I'm kinda shocked I didn't think of this sooner: The PCs were...

In your opinion, what's the best way to make the players lose?

While I agree that railroading is never fun, I believe that the opposite is also not fun. True, it's unfair to throw an encounter at the players for the sole purpose of screwing them over, but what fun is a game where every encounter the PCs come across is beatable? What's the point in trying to...

    When do power "effects" occur

And, I'll be a bit more specific to your questions. The damaging cloud of daggers occurs whether you hit or not. Therefore, Cloud of Daggers is great for taking out minions (as it doesn't matter if you hit or miss, the automatic damage will kill them on their turn unless they're somehow moved...

    When do power "effects" occur

An effect always happens whether the power hits or not. (Hit has its own line, usually, and if there are effects specifically on a miss, those have their own line too.) As far as WHEN the Effect happens (that is, whether it happens before or after the hit/miss), that depends on how the power is...

In your opinion, what's the best way to make the players lose?

The characters are level 4 at the moment. If the best option is to simply subdue them, that certainly won't be difficult, but if possible, I'd at least like to make an almost-balanced encounter.

In your opinion, what's the best way to make the players lose?

In a game session I'm going to be running soon, I plan on having a so-far-unseen NPC show up, steal a powerful artifact the players have, and also subdue and kidnap a PC or two (as well as two NPCs that are with them). I've been planning on this happening for a while, and it's fully within the...

    Grind

I'm probably not the greatest person to answer this question, as I have yet to be in a 4e game beyond 7th or 9th level (and I'm sure the issue of grind becomes more pronounced at Paragon or Epic tier), but I have yet to experience it. As a DM, I've noticed that there have been a few times when I...
