    D&D General Limiting Utility Cantrips

Mending is the only one I limit, mostly for worldbuilding purposes (Micah Sweet would be proud!). I have the magic unravel after 24-hours, restoring it to the original state. I don't sweat a lot of world building implications, but instantaneous and permanent fixing of broken items really does...

D&D General Do you play in person or online?

Both. I have an online only game with friends spread out over the country and an in person game with local friends that sometimes meets online.

Wizards of the Coast Is Sunsetting Sigil's Active Development

DDB has consistently sucked at being anything other than A) a marketplace and B) a character builder that is very unfriendly to house rules. It's a bad product that has remained in an embarassing state for years, and a small amount of development would go a long way. The campaign section is a...

D&D 5E (2024) Monster Manual 2025: Is Multiattack order prescriptive now?

Sure, tight writing is how you get the current dual wielding rules, which allow dual wielding with a shield. Or how a guy carrying a torch isn't visible through darkness because darkness obscures vision. Or all the other instances, like this very thread, where we're left to divining tea leaves...

D&D 5E (2024) Monster Manual 2025: Is Multiattack order prescriptive now?

It's really not a mystery. WOTC doesnt value consistency and tight writing. The gist of 5E is "Look, you're going to run it how you want to run it, so why bother?" Their gravitation towards "naturalistic" writing lets people do what they want and point to vague text justifying it. Which is...

    D&D 5E (2024) What's In D&D's New Starter Set?

On that's neat! I just had the PF2 PDF of the PF2 starter (which is quite good). I've taught a fair amount of kids/new players, I give each of them a set of these. https://critgames.com/shop/dice/color-coded-polyhedral-dice-five-sets/ They have to get their own crown royal bag though.

    D&D 5E (2024) What's In D&D's New Starter Set?

For the life of me, I don't understand why starter sets don't come with dice with a different color for each die. D8's and D10's look a lot alike for new players. Its much easier to go "roll the D8, the blue one".

    D&D 5E (2024) What's In D&D's New Starter Set?

D&D fans who have played for decades probably already know how to play D&D, or at least learn from a rulebook, given there weren't really starter sets previously. They aren't the target audience. This is a starter set for kids, primarily. My experience with younger players indicates they like...

    D&D 5E (2024) What's In D&D's New Starter Set?

That is a goofy looking red dragon. Then again, tracks to the 1e illustration hah. Looks good from the little bit we've seen. Phandelver is hard to beat though!

D&D 5E (2014) Mage Hand and Trap Avoidance

I like traps that are set pieces. Any simple attrition trap resolved in a single attack/save is a bad trap. Honestly, any unsprung trap is a boring trap. I don't want to see Indiana Jones fart around in a tunnel for 30 minutes poking floor tiles with long sticks. I wanna see him race the boulder.

D&D 5E (2024) Should Saving Throw DCs just be Ability Scores?

I've taken to giving half proficiency on saves. It's not perfect, but it's something. If I ever did my 5E Fantasy Heartbreaker, there's so much I would steal from PF2E, but the Trained/Expert/Master/Legendary level of proficiency bonus of +2/4/6/8 is at the top. It allows a more granular...

D&D Launches New Eberron-Themed Playtest With Dragonmarked Feats

The valor bard does basically all that on a 9 level caster chassis and hands out bardic inspiration.

D&D Launches New Eberron-Themed Playtest With Dragonmarked Feats

Artificer is still such a weird design. The martial ones work as hybrid casters, though Bladesinger and Blade/Valor Bards overshadow the gish, being full casters. The non-martial ones just seem weak. A few extra magic items do not make up for losing full casting. And that's all this class is...

    D&D 5E (2024) Its The Same Game Right? 5.0 Options in 5.5

Out of curiosity, what is the impact of this? Terminology or actual mechanical impact in a way I'm missing?

D&D 5E (2024) Should Saving Throw DCs just be Ability Scores?

This really feels like a change for change sake kind of proposal. It messes with monster DC's as well, and makes everything too stat dependent with no skill component. I'd be all in favor of going back to Fortitude/Reflex/Will saves though.

D&D General 5e Ogre stat block

Weird that Brute is listed but has no mechanics. If its just a descriptive trait for encounter building it seems like that would go elsewhere in the layout.

D&D 5E (2014) What could 5E do to make wealth worthwhile?

To paraphrase Don Draper... that's what the experience points are for! You're learning in the field. It's not like fighters need to pay for a license to hit some guy twice in a round. As for worldbuilding, I guarantee that the DM 's who like this wouldn't let a PC take a week off and rake in...

D&D 5E (2014) What could 5E do to make wealth worthwhile?

Its a thread on what players can spend rewards on. Burning it to get what they should otherwise get for free isn't exactly my idea of a reward. Rewards should be rewarding.
