D&D 4E Why Vancian spellcasting is good for the game (and should mostly be in 4e)

    1) I dont really care wether it is or isnt D&D personally, I just care wether I like it or not. 2) I think quite a few people feel the same way. 3) I know a lot of people don't feel that removing fire and forget makes it "not D&D" although there are certainly some who do 4) and most...

Class abilities vs Talents (or both?)

I think we can almost certainly say this will not happen. Spellcasting in D&D has always been a basic built in class feature of the classes that have it. And nothing that we have heard indicates that this will change. As for the mechanics should be the same for all classes and the talents and...

Warforged: Like them or loathe them?

Ohh dear....I hadnt thought about that. Although in practice I think they are pretty different.

Classes need to be ready to go from the beginning

I have a little bit of concern about this as well for various reasons, but as others have mentioned, its probably only one option. I especially wouldnt mind it if it is in fact a specific spell, rather than a class ability.

Classes need to be ready to go from the beginning

I agree in concept, but in practice the classes that have tried to do this in D&D...mostly Bard and Cleric, have ended up being underpowered and overpowered, respectively, in terms of mechanics.

Classes need to be ready to go from the beginning

You do realize that different people have different tastes and styles of play right? And you do realize that many, if not most people choose their class BOTH for "what it is" conceptually, and "what it can do" mechanically.

Class abilities vs Talents (or both?)

I sincerely hope its some of both. Some classes need to simply have some abilities.

D&D 4E Why Vancian spellcasting is good for the game (and should mostly be in 4e)

Why? Isnt the years spent in Wizard training enough? This is exactly the kind of thing I want in a magic system....it gives Mages the ability to manipulate their magical resources in more than one way. Rather than "I fill this 3rd level slot with Fireball, and all I can do with it is cast...

    Why is it so important?

But I have still seen what you describe take place many times because.. The players did this. This is one of the areas that, while I wouldnt mind mechanics reflecting it, its not necessary. Its linked to the concept of difficulty I was trying to get gizmo to understand. The characters, and...

    Why is it so important?

And so far, I see no reason to foresee the proposed changes taking that away (not that you were necessarily saying they would.)

    Babylon 5: Lost Tails

Yes. But, judging solely from his work, I think perhaps he does believe in something beyond the physical. I think the Minbari belief system...and also G'Kars speech at one point about shining a light on the wall...wherein sentient beings are believed to have souls as fragments of the Universe...

    Scaling the Caster Classes Back

And there is even more basis for a spell caster who is both...born with a spark, refined through learning. Thats why I dislike all the "origin" stuff in the class descreptions. Its also the only gripe I have with the Magister in Arcana Evolved...it fits what I want but still has the...

D&D 4E Why Vancian spellcasting is good for the game (and should mostly be in 4e)

Where do you get the idea that fighters will be doing wizardy stuff?

    Babylon 5: Lost Tails

Well, I think a lot of it also has to do with misused terminology. An Atheist is someone who doesnt believe in a god or gods. It doesnt make the person a materialist or secularist necessarily, but often its used in that way. I've even known people who identify as "atheists" who in reality simply...

D&D 4E Why Vancian spellcasting is good for the game (and should mostly be in 4e)

A lot of skills and powers ideas were incorporated almost directly into 3rd edition. Like touch attacks.

Things that you would like to see change/go away?

Reduced maybe. Brought into line with other magical offensive options (either by scaling them down or the other options up) definitely. Removed, I'm not so sure. This would result in something close to a classless system, which is unlikely in D&D. I think this may happen, and I'm not...

    Scaling the Caster Classes Back

The trouble starts when even in a typical group composed of people who have both an interest in roleplay/social and in their characters effectiveness in combat, and where everyones "min/maxing" skills are roughly equal, you still end up with some classes or other aspects being drastically more...

    Scaling the Caster Classes Back

No. What I mean is apparently some people like the part about Wizards where they run out of things to do before everyone else, and where they have to be worried about every spell they cast for fear of running out etc etc. The Sorcerer is only slightly less complicated than the Wizard...and...

Classes need to be ready to go from the beginning

I would add to that that for some people, supporting allies IS as fun as doing it yourself. However I firmly believe that design wise, no class should be stuck solely in that supporting role to the sacrifice of having even the option of being capable themselves.

    Scaling the Caster Classes Back

Mostly I just want them to get decent mid level non-melee focused defenses and obvious stuff. Spell Resistance, Freedom of Movement, Death Ward, Spell Immunity and its Greater version, a few others, need a place on the wizard spell list. They should also really be able to heal a bit, but I...
