D&D 5E (2014) Level Up! DING, fries are done!

I don't do XP but when I give out levels it is always after a long rest. It is assumed you have been training, studying, researching, and otherwise improving yourself while you were traveling and adventuring the entire time. There are training rules in the DMG for use during downtime, I don't...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sage Advice: Spellcasting

That is odd. I will continue to ignore that rule, just like I don't have people track ammunition.

    D&D 5E (2014) Eberron in 5th Ed - Ideas

The feel of Eberron isn't dependent on merchants selling +2 flaming swords. The world is magical for all the little everyday magical items and effects. People travel on lightning rails, cleansing stones in your inn make it so you don't have to shower, Dragonmarked houses provide services like...

    D&D Dungeon Master's Roundtable 2

I second this wonderful idea. But Arneson needs some show of love and respect too. Maybe a Arneson of gamers? As a broad term for a large group of us gamemasters and players alike.

    D&D Dungeon Master's Roundtable 2

Enjoyed it, not as much as I enjoyed the first one, but sequels are never as good.

D&D 5E (2014) Choosing between ASI and Feats; how important is a maxed stat?

My personal view on ASI vs Feats, is take a feat at 4th level to help you define your character concept and do some other interesting things a feat that gives options not just static bonuses. After that most likely take ASI's over feats until you get to 20 in your primary, then pick up another...

D&D 5E (2014) Having another wizard in the group...does it suck?

    Could you explain your sadness?

    D&D 5E (2014) Beginner question / ability check + proficiency bonus

Because attacks are not ability checks. There are three kinds of d20 rolls in 5e; Attacks, Saves, and Ability Checks. For example the guidance cantrip only effects ability checks so it doesn't give you a bonus to attacks or saves, same thing with the bard ability.

D&D 4E Spell concept to replicate 4e Bladesingers

Well polearm master is amazing. The bonus attack is a d4+str mod, usable at 10' reach just like any other attack with a polearm. It counts as a two handed weapon so other damage modifiers like great weapon fighting apply, and since it is made with a weapon once the fighter gains a magic...

    D&D 5E (2014) Attunement

My favorite part of magical secrets is getting 5th level ranger and paladin spells at class level 10 compared to rangers and paladins not having those spells available til class level 17. So while most campaigns might not ever get to 17th level and never see a ranger cast swift quiver, many...

D&D 5E (2014) Any reason not to let PCs add Proficiency to all Saves?

All of this. Characters are supposed to have weaknesses, you will also notice most monsters don't have any proficiency bonus to any saves.

    D&D 5E (2014) Attunement

Attunement like rarity itself seems to be mostly just odd, when making your own items I would just go with your gut. As to wands, I think if wands of cure wounds existed they would be uncommon and not require attunement, based on other 1st level wands. I do see peoples criticism as to how they...

D&D 4E Spell concept to replicate 4e Bladesingers

Yes that is the idea. The spell can target any creature the spellcaster can see within range of the spell.

D&D 5E (2014) Basic DM encounter building tips

Something I forgot to mention in the original post. Use the magic items that are apart of the treasure. I did not do this when I first started out and I see it commonly in streams, if the heroes are going to get a magic wand, weapon, wondrous item whatever try and have one of the...

D&D 5E (2014) Basic DM encounter building tips

DM encounter building tricks and tips Nothing here is new, just putting food for thought out there and seeing what other ideas people use in their games. The following are DM tricks for interesting combat encounter building using just the monsters/hazards/gear provided in the game, yes DM’s...

D&D 5E (2014) Having another wizard in the group...does it suck?

For me it comes down to shared spotlight time. In a group you have different skills and abilities to deal with situations, when another character has the same set of skills and abilities it diminishes my characters uniqueness. If I am playing the group rogue and scout, I want to be the...

D&D 5E (2014) Having another wizard in the group...does it suck?

RPG's are a group activity as such the group should be consulted before new members are brought in. The host of the place you gather at and the DM have more say about the final decision but it is just polite to have the conversation and include all the current players. As to a new player...

D&D 4E Spell concept to replicate 4e Bladesingers

I enjoyed playing the 4e bladesinger very much, the class is built around making a melee attack and getting off a minor magical attack at the same time against a nearby creature. I have liked the bladesinger concept since 2e, and I am trying to design a spell that will allow for this in 5e...

D&D 5E (2014) Choosing between ASI and Feats; how important is a maxed stat?

Go with the feat, precisely because it allows for you to have more fun and lets you play the character the way you imagine. With low AC's and saves across the board (bounded accuracy) a +1 here or there is not more important than fulfilling your character concept. Now saying that technically...
