D&D 5E (2014) [+] Rangers should have monster fighting spells equivalent to Paladin's Smite spells. Discuss!

Also true, but those problems can be resolved (theoretically)! It's just, yeah. Maybe not especially likely that WOTC will actually do it.

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Rangers should have monster fighting spells equivalent to Paladin's Smite spells. Discuss!

That is their fault, true, but. It's more just a symptom of it being a mechanic present from the initial release, I feel like. They've gone some ways towards helping the matter since, like I say, you can take a fighting style or a feat for maneuvers. It's maybe not perfect, but it's not a hard...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Rangers should have monster fighting spells equivalent to Paladin's Smite spells. Discuss!

I think you're underrating what this would mean for Battlemaster, in spirit and in practice. You're giving the key to their kingdom to another class. Rangers getting maneuvers from their base class, on-top of maneuvers exclusive to them, that's damaging to Battlemaster's identity in a way that...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Rangers should have monster fighting spells equivalent to Paladin's Smite spells. Discuss!

Eeeeh. I'm reluctant to have the Ranger tread on the Fighter's toes any further. They're already very between several classes, depending on the rendition.

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Rangers should have monster fighting spells equivalent to Paladin's Smite spells. Discuss!

That's actually something I've come up against in my own homebrewing for Ranger, yeah it could easily be a flavour break depending on how rigidly you define such things. I think you could maaaybe swing certain things that aren't as bad; clenching your fists as a somatic component, muttering some...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Rangers should have monster fighting spells equivalent to Paladin's Smite spells. Discuss!

I'm not gonna say that thinking Rangers shouldn't have spellcasting is wrong, even though having it is my personal preference! I understand that perspective and the argument for it, even though I disagree! That having been said, if Rangers having spellcasting is the norm (for the foreseeable...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Rangers should have monster fighting spells equivalent to Paladin's Smite spells. Discuss!

I think something that'd help with dismantling Favoured Enemy for good, would be creating a spiritual successor to it in the form of a catalogue of spells intended for specific creature types (or more broadly, for creatures that have at least one of the iconic traits of particular creatures...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Mulling over a homebrew 10th level Ranger feature, "Equalizer". Help!

Ahhh. That makes more sense. Hunter's Prey is alriiight. I think it only ought to be a little bonus alongside their main ability, though. Those features are gonna look wanting before too long.

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Mulling over a homebrew 10th level Ranger feature, "Equalizer". Help!

I would say, while there's nothing inherently wrong with this, it's not the right track for what I'm intending here. I'm shooting for a parallel to regular Divine Smite at the mid-game level, since Paladins get a parallel to Ranger's (usual) signature mechanic at the mid-game levels. I have...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Mulling over a homebrew 10th level Ranger feature, "Equalizer". Help!

It has occurred to me that while a distinction between a melee and a ranged variant is fun, it kinda over-complicates it unnecessarily. Having it be just one ability you can use when making a weapon attack, melee or ranged, creates less ambiguity. And if it knocks the target prone and reduces...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Mulling over a homebrew 10th level Ranger feature, "Equalizer". Help!

I would advocate for being able to perform the melee version unarmed. I've always thought it was lame that you can't Smite unarmed. Though, yes, the ranged version would require a ranged weapon obviously.

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Mulling over a homebrew 10th level Ranger feature, "Equalizer". Help!

Oh, hey! That's nice to know, that I'm harkening back to a legacy feature without even intending to! It encourages me to see it through! I think I did consider scaling it off the Ranger's level once, but. Was concerned it could end up being far too much or far too little damage, depending. I...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Mulling over a homebrew 10th level Ranger feature, "Equalizer". Help!

So yeah, over the past couple years or so I've been tinkering with a homebrew levelling table for Ranger, because WOTC won't ever give me what I truly desire. Part of my intent with what I have, is creating some level of parity with Paladin. Not rendering them 1:1, but they do parallel eachother...

D&D 5E (2014) [+]What Characters Are You Excited to Build?

Lemme rephrase; I would advocate for Expertise alongside some specific nature-y abilities. Climbing and swimming, setting up ambushes in the canopy, communicating with the beasts etc. Let 'em have Expertise and abilities that reside outside of skill checks. Similar to what Revised Ranger had...

D&D 5E (2014) [+]What Characters Are You Excited to Build?

Yeeaah, probably not. I think it feasibly could, it just. Doesn't ever. I dunno, I don't think there's anything outright wrong with that sort of idea, but you are somewhat asking for straightforward full caster casting to be less ubiquitous and strong. Which, we can all dream, but! There's not...

D&D 5E (2014) [+]What Characters Are You Excited to Build?

I think the game is better when it accommodates choices like that rather than forcing anything! A choice isn't always necessary, but in that instance, one would've helped (it still would've been a lame feature but not as bad)! It's like with Hunter Ranger, the game doesn't force you to take...

D&D 5E (2014) [+]What Characters Are You Excited to Build?

That's what I was trying to say but couldn't quite put it concisely. So, thanks! Y'know I didn't even properly consider that. Yeah it is also theoretically lame to have to abide by the mechanical restrictions of spellcasting just to perform your class abilities. And also leave yourself...

D&D 5E (2014) [+]What Characters Are You Excited to Build?

You get what I mean. It's not hard to imagine a Ranger that just does not fit the flavour of that sort of effect. Or on the more extreme level, simply does not use or even carry a ranged option despite it being a good idea, nevermind using a spell that specifically requires one. Hell we're not...

D&D 5E (2014) [+]What Characters Are You Excited to Build?

My thing with (the various iterations of) Nature's Veil is, it's objectively better than Hide in Plain Sight, but it's still a can of worms unto itself. Invisibility without actually hiding is often like that. Gloomstalker's Umbral Sight is the same way. And also, this is even more of a me...

D&D 5E (2014) [+]What Characters Are You Excited to Build?

I do actually agree with this point in general, just the Conjure Barrage + Volley thing is a bad example where I hate it. Even if Conjure Barrage + Volley weren't spells and just things Rangers could do, I'd still be annoyed. I dislike Rangers being pushed into being exclusively bow and arrow...
