    Cookin again

+1 for @prabe's Taste of home suggestion. A company I recently just discovered is Gooseberry Patch. They have quite the lineup of humble and inexpensive recipe books like this one. One example they give: That said, I've been pretty impressed with my Walmart's offerings of late. It really...

    OSR Dragonslayer RPG truly delivers.

Just the four "base" classes, so f,w,c, and t. It was around $80. Which is why I thought the price decrease was worth posting here about in case that was the only factor holding someone back.

@Gus L Was looking over old messages from Greg and saw this: So you have that to look forward to!

Looks like it to me. Also noticed when multiclassing, you take the least desirable trait of the two classes. So a Fighter/Magic-User still couldn't wear armor. Major nerf to the old rules.

    OSR Dragonslayer RPG truly delivers.

It's seemingly tiny alterations like these that significantly impact the game that are hard to describe to others. Especially since there isn't Weapon Masterty (another rule I'm not a fan of) and no Damage VS Large catagory (where swords excelled at too), so whatever cool magic weapon you find...

    OSR Dragonslayer RPG truly delivers.

Not to mention the auto-parry multiple times per combat! Hopefully they're balanced out with the high attribute requirements, lower To-Hit bonus, and being forced to use a staff... I think my only other reservation is To-Hit bonuses stopping at Lv 10, but I'm not familiar with high level play...

    OSR Dragonslayer RPG truly delivers.

Yeah, sorry. Looking it over now I can see how it's kind of over the top. That's something I can work on in the future for sure, especially when it comes to using the word "really" (will try and keep it to a minimum here). I was surprised by what Greg came out with though. I knew he wrote well...

You can try the Dragonsfoot thread he started. Not sure how often he checks it. Out of curiosity, what are your questions? Oh, if about "skill checks", yes, up to the DM. If an action's resolution is important and you're unsure of what the outcome would be, I'd personally, I'd just steal...

    OSR Dragonslayer RPG truly delivers.

@Gus L Also something else to consider, creators that have their own system have a firm foundation to base their other products on. No worries about another creator deciding to go in a completely different direction, quitting the hobby, or making public statements you don't agree with. In...

Really cool write up, thanks for sharing. Like many others, I only have Barrowmaze, so any insight on his other products is very welcome. I own and have read just about every clone on the market and think Dragonslayer's art justifies it's existence alone. For those that like AD&D over B/X...

Thankfully, my "hardcore" group has moved to PF2R and really liking the tactics, caring about gold, and the complex builds that can be made. We will probably never go back to 5E (maybe LevelUp though). Also, appreciate that there is no randomness to character creation. That put's everyone on...

The Mighty TBD vs Arden Vul

Very cool! I'm always tempted to buy this when it goes on sale, but know there is just no hope this will ever hit the table.

Is that poking fun of someone in particular? Because straight from Greg Gillespie's rulebook 😄 :

I hear that. As much as I dislike 5E, it's still the game I run when playing with younger kids or people new to the hobby. Because of that, 5E has seen way more play than any of my OSR systems. Like 10 to 1. Rules Cyclopedia is one my most treasured books, but there's enough small, personal...

I think with most things, it really depends on the quality of the textbook. A good chunk of my professors made us buy their material and for the most part I didn't mind. Having the perfect book the instructor knew inside out to study for your exam did make it easier. Now, the ones who sold us...

    OSR Dragonslayer RPG truly delivers.

There are so many great OSR games to play at the moment! I honestly haven't found "the perfect one" yet, so kind of just rotate them to match whatever system the module I'm running is based on. For games that I actually write my own adventures for, that would be Shadowdark for simple crawls and...

Just wanted to jump back in here to say the Dragonslayer hardback is now listed at $45 on Drive-Thru. If I'm remembering right, that's about half the price of what was previously offered. Honestly, that was my only criticism of the game, so hoping it stays affordable from now on.

    D&D 5E (2014) Optimizing for more grit…

Now that the hardcovers are finally reasonable priced on DriveThru, I say do it!

    D&D 5E (2014) Optimizing for more grit…

I see Greg retooled the adventure specifically for 5E, so my advice would be to run it as is and see if the rules actually need to be tweaked. If it's already designed to run "gritty" wouldn't want to double down on it. Levels 1-3 are generally deadly enough anyways, so wouldn't hurt!

D&D General 5e D&D to OSR pipeline or circle?

My group was the same way. We worked out a system where I could change mechanical aspects of combat mid fight in exchange for more XP. This was always telegraphed like, "You strike for 10, but doesn't seem to have much impact. The orc grinning in front of you must be a leader of some kind." That...
