D&D General Has 5e become noise?

Honesty I filter out all players option class/subsclass/feat stuff and only look at bestiaries and campaigns. That actually makes it manageable. There are some amazing 3pp campaigns out there that are definitely worth considering. I don’t need players option stuff there is plenty in official...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

The other wider solution to this is a move away from static dungeon crawling that leaves timing entirely at the players whim and a move towards, mysteries, heists, city crawls, event based adventure etc. What I would call modern adventuring. Secondly - design boss encounters to be a challenge...

Which are you, The plan everything out GM, or the Ad lib?

This is exactly my DM style. I prep extensively. Factions, Organisations, Locations, NPCs, monsters and events. What the PCs then do happens in that context. Decision making becomes easier because my prep work provides the inspiration for rational and logical outcomes.

I think it is time for a break.

You’re a TTRPG expert on multiple levels. Well over the 10,000 hours. It would be a real shame for you to sever the tie completely. Have you considered switching to just playing instead of DMing. Even if it’s with online groups? I found that extremely refreshing.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

my solution is to make ‘dungeons’ smaller. 3-4 encounters in a 5 room-ish dungeon format where each combat is relevant and matters. The location is dynamic and it would be counter intuitive for the party to stop to long rest half way through. Dungeons of Drakkenheim is a good example of this in...

What rpg system would you use for a 60+ session fantasy campaign?

Hey, so I’ve done a bit of both really. Magic required the most changes so now all wizards in Waterdeep are split into specialities - pyromancers, seers, spiritualists, alchemists etc. which is easy enough to do. I captured the dangerous chaotic risks of Magic using a magical anomaly linked to...

What rpg system would you use for a 60+ session fantasy campaign?

No blog I’m afraid. I can give a quick summary though. Party consists of a Sigmarite Witch Hunter, a Rat Catcher (ex Scrier, ex Riverwarden) and a Noble (Ex Knight of the White Wolf, Ex Duelist). They have about 8000 xp each which has left all near the end of Tier Three. I’ve played it pretty...

D&D General I made an app that creates D&D session summaries and tracks your campaign

I mean, I’m pretty sure it isn’t personal data unless you make it meaningful by linking it to something else tangible about yourself. Your name or email etc. The system doesn’t know what you look or sound like because it doesn’t know who you are. It’s listening to a disembodied voice talking...

D&D General I made an app that creates D&D session summaries and tracks your campaign

I’m not sure we ever confide personal data during game sessions. It just isn’t something that comes up.

What rpg system would you use for a 60+ session fantasy campaign?

WFRP 4e is an extremely compelling campaign system for long term campaigns. My Enemy Within campaign has ran for 80 sessions. It’s as fresh as ever. 3 years in and coming close to a conclusion. My WFRP 4e Gangs of Waterdeep campaign is 20 sessions in and going really well. No sign of slowing...

XKCD: Could we survive eating only humans?

I put a few thousand hours into the online game DayZ a few years back with my American friends. A zombie apocalypse survival horror. There is a whole subculture of people in that game who kill, cut up and eat newbies and even feed them to helpless prisoners. Worse… in the game cooked human fat...

WotBS How different is too different for posting adventure write ups?

Share it. They are good inspiration and sometimes useful to demonstrate what is possible. Either way I’m sure it will be fun to read.

    Drakkenheim Daggerheart Campaign Guide Announced.

I run for an experienced long term group in cohesive group. The four of them started at level 1 and managed fine. So four levels of growth. A level up every other session typically.

IS Your GM Out To Get You (Serious)

So interestingly in last nights session - the last in a 10 session delve into Undermountain using WFRP 4e - the part jokingly asked I would be TPKing them this week? The party has just finished the Drow enclave on level 3. They had several critical wounds - the wizard a broken hip, the front...

    Drakkenheim Daggerheart Campaign Guide Announced.

Yeah the factions based intrigue is very well detailed. The five factions and how they interact is basically the spine of the campaign. We’re about 60 hours in and just reached level 5 I believe. Party just started on the inner city. I highly recommend checking this out.

Critical Role Critical Role Season 4 DM says encounters will not be balanced.

Let me be clear… it’s just my opinion… it’s not a fundamental law of the universe and by bad maybe I should clarify ‘not good’. I’m not saying that all encounters have to be CR = Party average level. There will obviously be a range of easy to difficult encounters. However if a party repeatedly...

    D&D 5E (2024) The Great Wizard Extinction.

Wizards are a lot of fun. I thought you were the DM Zardnaar? Surely you allow wizards to buy their new spells & scroll ingredients. New scroll scribing in the PHB is great and very useful. If a sorcerer uses their arcane points for spell slots it equates to the arcane recovery. Seems fair. I...

Critical Role Critical Role Season 4 DM says encounters will not be balanced.

My point was that unbalanced encounters are bad. Not just because when encounters are too deadly they kill characters but because they can also be too easy which is dull. It wasn’t an either/or thing.

D&D General Beadle & Grimms Forgotten Realms Premium Map Collection

I’m not a fan of the continent wide map if that is how it comes. Not enough detail and I don’t really like the art style. However really I love the Myth Drannor map and really like that places like Shadowdale and Scardale are getting the Mike Schley treatment. I’m hoping we get a mid detail...
