Critical Role Reveals Soldiers' Table and Motivations

And it's the players choice to not listen to explicit warnings from the DM that their course of action could lead to severe consequences. For my personal DM style, had I been running that situation and Marisha had pushed again after the explicit warning, I would have broken from the scene and...

Critical Role Reveals Soldiers' Table and Motivations

Re Primus and Murray, that’s exactly the kind of high level play that I love watching. Should almost come with a “professional players, don’t attempt at home” warning. Marisha and BLeeM are highly skilled, empathetic, storytellers. I have no doubt that Marisha understood she was playing with...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

And to control the pace, you don't need to run 20 rounds of combat every long rest, you just need the party to believe that there could be 20 rounds of combat before that long rest. Vary your adventure days, have the occasional after BBEG lieutenant fights (where the BBEGs lieutenants show up a...

Critical Role's Campaign 4 Opens With a Funeral and Plenty of Intrigue

So, one of the old rules of film and television was that you should be able to enter a show at any point and within 10 minutes understand what's going on. That was largely because the old film reels were about 10 minutes in length (a feature film being made up by many of those reels) and if you...

Critical Role's Campaign 4 Opens With a Funeral and Plenty of Intrigue

My personal guess is that Sam is playing a Divine Soul Sorcerer and Assamir who been made to believe he's a human cleric by his family. I'm guessing his grandmother made some deal with a Solar or other powerful celestial post the god war to bring some divinity back into the world, and the...

Critical Role's Campaign 4 Opens With a Funeral and Plenty of Intrigue

From what I've seen 20 episodes into Worlds Beyond Number, BLeeM has an excellent ability to allow for emergent storytelling even while pacing sessions to be exciting and rich in conflict. There are always 'big things' happening in the background of WBN, but each episode is a treasure unto...

D&D General What version of D&D are you playing?

2024. Ran a 2014/2024 hybrid game for the last year, but that campaign is taking a break and now I'm playing in a 2024 exclusive.

Critical Role's Campaign 4 Opens With a Funeral and Plenty of Intrigue

Def feels like we're getting primarily Epic seriousness that will be sprinkled with comic relief rather than lighthearted adventure that occasionally get's serious. I'm a big fan of how C1 and pre-covid C2 did it the later way. That said... I'm willing to give Brennan a try with the more epic...

Critical Role Critical Role Season 4 DM says encounters will not be balanced.

Makes sense. With three different tables, even if one or two wipe out, there is still story continuity with the third table. That's an elegant solution for the problem of how to continue a story after at TPK.

    Wheel of Time S3

That is some serious mission creep. And yeah, my main concern with the series (and even the last three books) is that it needs a really good edit. Maybe 25-30% cut out and it would really pop. At the same time, I don't mind an author writing their way out of trouble and just going for it...

    Wheel of Time S3

Finished the series yesterday! An absolutely epic conclusion that resolved it's conflicts with grace and power. This will go into rotation for me with The Dark Tower and The Expanse as once a decade or so re-reads, I think. Not sure where I'd rank it among those three long series right at the...

    D&D 5E (2024) Rate D&D 2024

Intersting that nearly all the posts I see in this thread are talking about it being a 5 or below, and yet in the poll 60%+ rate it 7 or higher and a full 33% rate it an 8 or 9. Seems to give credence to the idea that the '24 detractors are a vocal minority. For me, the system is a 9. I feel...

    D&D 5E (2024) Thoughts on Infinite Staircase?

    1. I’m pretty sure there is another way up, but adding another clue or removing the skill check for an intelligent character to read the runes wouldn’t be a bad idea for that anyhow. My players figured it out instantly. 2. I stayed super zoomed in. But once they found the first room leading...

    D&D 5E (2024) Thoughts on Infinite Staircase?

    1. Not sure. My party took the flame portal. 2. I used DdB maps and kept where they were under fog of war, describing intersections to them and changing cardinal directions at each bend. They freaked out when they crossed their own rope line at one point. Super fun. 3. I used a d6 and anytime...

D&D 5E (2024) What’s the difference between sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards?

Sorcery incarnate is the big piece. Chaos bolt to a lesser extent.

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

The most popular settings in 5e I would put as renaissance rather than medieval. But not yet industrial. I think most of the OPs reasoning ties to Renaissance just as well.

D&D 5E (2024) What’s the difference between sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards?

One of my favorite things about the 2024 class updates is they worked to separate these three classes more then in 2014. The stories were always separated well, but now the mechanics help more with the fiction. Sorcerers especially now feel like the powerful innate specialists of the arcane.

    D&D 5E (2024) Thoughts on Infinite Staircase?

Been running this for my group with the 24 rules for about the last year and having a blast. Used the campaign frame, but occasionally head off on adventures from other anthologies. Works perfectly with Nafas as the patron. Party is level 10 now and next adventure will be a home brew BG3...
