I think the raw math says something interesting. I don’t dispute it. However in actual play I’ve found fireball to be very effective as a player. As a DM too, but I think that’s a different story.

The uniqueness of GURPS existed even in its simpler early box set form. It can retain that GURPSness and become a streamlined simpler game and not be this behemoth it has become in 4e.

It's a really good point and in a lot of ways was right in front of us the whole time. Focus fire is better than spreading out damage in the short run, and combats tend to be all in the short run.

Some great insights in this podcast. For example why were Hit Dice never used in other mechanics. Fireball isn't actually stronger, Mearls argues with receipts. Etc, def a good listen!
