D&D 5E (2014) So 5E is the Successor to AD&D 2nd Edition? How and How Not?

The only edition that feels anything like 2nd edition was 1st edition and even then 2nd was better by a long way. Since then each edition has become it's own thing. If anything 5th feels like the offspring of 3rd and 4th but without the "bad" elements.

    Jurassic Park RPG?

I have the three books released for the Primeval RPG (A dinosaur based time travel-ish British show from the mid-00's) and that would work well for a Jurassic Universe RPG. I've often considered doing so myself.

Call of Cthulhu 1920's. It all went wrong. Hospitalised.

How likely are you to use D&D for your next game?

From here on in, I'm with 5th 2024 for my fantasy games. I don't get to RPG as much as I used to so I'm sticking to the new edition.

D&D General Which edition did Turn Undead the best?

I prefer the D20/Pathfinder version. The rules are simpler and easy to understand. No fiddly tables.

D&D General Playing to "Win" - The DM's Dilemma

I will use monsters and combative NPC's according to their personalities and goals. However, in the middle of a fight I am unlikely to have an opponent strike down a unconscious PC without reason. Better to do that once the combat is over. It's intelligent and fairer for the player. An...

What is the MOST IMPORTANT skill for a GM to have?

The ability to improvise quickly and seamlessly on the spot. For high level play this is a must have ability IMO.

D&D 5E (2024) Do you like the Purple Dragon Knight Subclass?

I like it but feel it does need some tweaks.

D&D 5E (2014) Question for folks who use D&D Beyond: How well does it work with the new rules?

My limited experience is this... if you use it for just 2014 or 2024 then it works fine. If you try and combine the two, it has occasional issues.

New Unearthed Arcana Released, With 8 New Forgotten Realms-Themed Subclasses

How would you adapt the lore/concept of the Scion of Three subclass to somewhere not FR? I'm just trying to think how it would work for my own homebrew setting and I'm hitting a dead end.

New Unearthed Arcana Released, With 8 New Forgotten Realms-Themed Subclasses

I was only reminiscing about Spellfire the other day to an old friend, after I found my rather dusty copy of the novel in a box.

    D&D General Psychic Sneak Attack?

Thank you. That is what we went with for the session. Just wanted to check we were doing it right.

    D&D General Psychic Sneak Attack?

So a question came up in our 2024 game tonight and we weren't sure of the correct answer and we couldn't find it anywhere obvious in the new PHB. The party Rogue just took SoulKnife as his subclass, so he generates psychic blades that deal psychic damage. Does the sneak attack damage become...

Do You Think Open Playtests Improve a Game's Development?

My only experience here was with last year's Daggerheart open playtest. I loved the original release and my group gave feedback. Each subsequent playtest update removed or changed elements that I liked and it spoilt some of my enjoyment. I included that in the feedback but more and more I felt...

    D&D 5E (2024) Humanoids in the MM...

The more I see of these changes, the more likely I am to choose myself what something is. Goblins and Bullywugs as Fey, for example, doesn't fit my game world.

For those who have embraced new systems/games, what was the deciding factor?

We've been playing Pathfinder 1st for the last 15 years, and frankly coming back after Covid, I found that the crunchy rules and over-optimised characters had lost it's appeal. Coming back to D&D with 2024 edition still maintains some of that but on a lighter note which I am enjoying more.

How open are you to trying new systems?

As I mentioned in the similar thread, the problem for me is that right now I'm comfortable with D&D2024. I'm in my 50's and I don't get to game as much as I used to, and so I just want to focus on one system that I enjoy.

    D&D 5E (2024) What's Your 2026 WotC D&D Wishlist?

Monster books. Make sure all the classics are brought up to date. Can't have enough monsters. Options. Something that is just subclasses, feats and species. Equipment Guide. One of my favourite and most often used books for Pathfinder 1st was the Ultimate Equipment book. I'd love something to...
