D&D General Monsters you love to hate, and monsters you hate to love.

We had a fun roper encounter in Forge of Fury. It was positioned across from a fast moving stream, and its dang reach was so long it could drag PCs into the water. That fight scared the crap out of them.

Official News Level Up’s Archlich: The Mouthless One

I don't have the monster menagerie yet. I hear it is the best part of LU. I think I will wait until it is available on Roll20, as that is the only platform I use now.

D&D 5E (2014) New player, questions about new edition

Sounds like you have the basics. Lost Mine is FANTASTIC. I have said this in the past, but it ranks up there in the top 5 adventurers of all time, in any edition of D&D. If you take Essentials and cherry pick it to add flavor and new encounters to Lost Mine, you will have a super robust...

D&D 5E (2014) New player, questions about new edition

Nothing is really ever obsolete. I have run adventures from the 1980s and adapted them to 5e. It's easy to do. All that changes are the stat blocks. The stories are the same. Everything is reusable, again and again.

D&D 5E (2014) New player, questions about new edition

If you are DMing, I highly, highly recommend getting Lost Mine of Phandelver and the Essentials starter set expansion, and if you can find the 4th edition Neverwinter book, you will have enough Sword Coast material to take your players from 1st to 10th level.

D&D 5E (2014) New Spellcasting Blocks for Monsters --- Why?!

No, I don't think he can. What he SHOULD have is maximized lightning bolt at-will. I mean, he needs to be scary. He IS scary, he has some frightful combat abilities, but OTOH, it is disappointing that he is stripped down to a combat encounter. With prestidigitation.

Spelljammer A look at 30 Spelljammer Minis

I like them a lot. Don't want to pay that dang much though. I would just photoshop them into Roll20, good enough.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e - Tales of the Old Margreve (Roll20) Campaign Recaps

The PCs STEAMROLLED the next encounter at the bandit tower; just, absolutely annihilated it and hardly took any damage.

D&D General The word "Dweomer" by Gygax

Oh, that's interesting, didn't know that. I think 5e should embrace the word and bring it back! It's a cool word.

D&D General The word "Dweomer" by Gygax

It just came to me out of the blue that "dweomer" hasn't been used in D&D since...what, 2nd edition? Ist? I thought Gygax invented it, but a quick Google search says Borrowed from Middle English dweomer, from Old English dwimor, from Proto-Germanic *dwemrą, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰewh₂-...

D&D 5E (2014) Princes of the Apocalypse campaign recaps

Sorry, just saw this. No, the last session was with the Fire and Water Princes fighting. I had a big ending planned, but the guy's house we played it, we couldn't play there anymore. Sadly, this person cancelled so many sessions for personal reasons that we also couldn't finish Tomb of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd Post-Mortem (Spoilers)

I agree that Amber Temple was was of the coolest places. No one died (I pulled some punches) but they were terrified the whole time. I re-used the map in another campaign as The Crumbling Tomb, changed some encounters around and added a sublevel demi-plane. I liked the revised version even...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e - Tales of the Old Margreve (Roll20) Campaign Recaps

I had prepped the first four levels of Netherdeep in Roll20 (meaning, lots of maps) but then I saw the Spelljammer release, so I will almost surely run that instead. I missed the entire Spelljammer wave in the 80s and 90s, and it sounds like the kind of crazy plane-hopping multiverse weirdness...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e - Tales of the Old Margreve (Roll20) Campaign Recaps

The party is 8th level now. There is enough plot stuff to get them to 9th easily, at which point I will probably wrap up this campaign. One of their destinations is Castle Shadowcrag, and like the Amber Temple remade into the Crumbling Tomb, I can going to retrofit pieces of Ravenloft into...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e - Tales of the Old Margreve (Roll20) Campaign Recaps

I do plan to go back to it, but I won't use the whole thing. The players were overwhelmed by all the options, and one said it seemed like we were playing a new campaign...which they were. I sampled some of the fun bits, but then got them out and back to Midgard. The whole court section is...
