    Battletech Public Playtest Thread

(On a completely separate note, it's been 20+ years since I last released some alternate BattleTech rules... not sure how these will be received, but let's go for it! A trio of rules that aim (pun intended) to alleviate the main hitch of Classic BattleTech, that of game length, by postulating...

    Battletech Public Playtest Thread

Finally getting a chance to post here about the (revised since first released) Gear Playtest rules: AMS changes: Both seem fine. AMS tends to be pretty niche and also tends runs out of ammo real darn quick. They probably could use a bit more bang for their c-bucks. Standardized Explosive...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

I'd caution here that this type of mechanics (which I enjoy) work better with a bell-curve dice system than with a linear 1 die roll (d20), unless you enjoy seeing quite a bit of swing, both from roll to roll and strings of poor (or excellent) results.

D&D General Poll: How many Role Playing Games do you play besides D&D?

From the last year or so: Troubleshooters Cortex Prime (for our Broken Lands campaign) The Aurora RPG Engine (for our Star Wars Campaign) FATE (for a Secret of Cats game) FitD (Scum & Villainy con game) Lancer (for a con game) James Bond (for a con game) Star Trek Adventures (for a con game...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Hmm, re: control spells and the legendary resistance workaround, one way that has worked well for my campaigns (and not using legendary resistance) is to design and treat “solo” creatures as multiple separate creatures with a shared HP pool. That way, they act multiple times per round on...

What TTRPGs Excel At Not Having Combat?

Hmmm, a bit yes, in that it uses the gamut of polyhedral dice. But in my view a lot of no, not only in the way it uses the dice (with dice pools) but also a very different intent and gaming focus (more "narrative"). Maybe 90% FATE with a dash of Savage Worlds. :) (That said, I have only read...

What TTRPGs Excel At Not Having Combat?

Alrightee, here is my pitch to “sell you (and everyone else!) on Cortex.” :) As you’re familiar with Fate, many of the advantages and selling points about Fate applies here too, including a narrative/fiction focus, flexibility to define characters through Stunts (called SFX in Cortex Prime)...

What TTRPGs Excel At Not Having Combat?

It was then bought by Direwolf who have done very little with it, unfortunately (understatement). So it's kind of in limbo insofar as new material or official games built with it other than Tales of Xadia. :/

What TTRPGs Excel At Not Having Combat?

-nods- I hear you on that -- it's one of the biggest hurdles to get into Cortex. Fortunately, as Parmandur mentioned, there are handful of official though unfortunately out of print Cortex games that showcase it's breadth, including Smallville, the superhero drama game where combat is not the...

What TTRPGs Excel At Not Having Combat?

I'll second Cortex Prime. It emphasizes the fiction/narrative and storytelling beats, and as it's a toolkit it can be tailored to meet the campaign's needs. Be easy to use a challenge pool to represent both antagonists or broader obstacles, with everyone getting a chance to overcome the...

    I made a terrible life decision…

Nice! That's how my own shelves for the most part also ended up being sorted, by themes/genres. D&D has its own shelf due to the sheer number of books over 5+ editions, but the rest of my shelves each have 3-6 different related genres grouped together (sub-grouped by the individual games...

D&D General Why Enworld should liberate D&D from Hasbro

Heheh, as it turns out no, as the lack of firearms in that list may illustrate. ;) D!oh of course, good point!

D&D General Why Enworld should liberate D&D from Hasbro

oOOOH, are we doing armory tallys now? What do I have in my house... 3 spears, 3 staffs, 8 Jian, 4 Dao, 2 Guan Dao, 1 Pu Dao, 1 pair of Butterfly Swords, 2 pairs of double daggers, 1 chain whip, 2 three-section staffs, 2 bokken, 1 metal fan, 1 bow, 2 paintball rifles (not sure those are really...

Your top 5 sci-fi movies (and why)

I did at least include it by listing the "Star Wars Trilogy". It may not have started many things, but as a conclusion and follow up to the adventure of Ep IV it is, as a whole, solid enough. (And really I think RotJ gets more disdain than it deserves.) And Williams' deep, haunting score when...
