Let's talk about "plot", "story", and "play to find out."

Just because you weren't able to make that change doesn't change my recommendation that people should try to make that change. (And this isn't specifically about 4e, this is a broader consideration.) If you can't, you can't. If the opportunity cost for trying is too high, then no one is...

Let's talk about "plot", "story", and "play to find out."

I think many more people can become appreciators of things they don't like with some effort. But it's simply that many people don't judge that change to be worth the effort. Like, I grew up as a very picky eater. It's something I still struggle with; there are a lot of foods I don't enjoy...

Let's talk about "plot", "story", and "play to find out."

I mean, is the idea that your preferences can’t grow and change actually a serious response? I mean, when 4e came out, I didn’t initially like it. It was explanations on how to approach these mechanics differently on these forums (primarily from @pemerton) that taught me how to approach games...

D&D General When Was it Decided Fighters Should Suck at Everything but Combat?

Well, I know how fast the ogres are going, but not where they are.

D&D General When Was it Decided Fighters Should Suck at Everything but Combat?

As a complete tangent, I kind of want to make a statblock for "quantum ogres".

D&D General When Was it Decided Fighters Should Suck at Everything but Combat?

I've noticed that one of the more difficult transitions for groups going from trad/neotrad skill-check based play to a more OSR type system is dealing with the absence of skill checks to gate knowledge and perception, and moving into a "just the tell the player the info (unless it's actively...

Or you can, ya know, expand your preferences.

D&D General WotC Continues D&D's Advance To Digital First Brand

My only concern with the digital tools is that I'm a maximalist for homebrew when it comes to D&D; any default tool that isn't easily amenable to manual editing of the available options isn't something I want to use in my game. I want tables that are excited to look at new options from the book...

D&D 5E (2024) Pact of the Chain + Nick Mastery

I really have to thank this thread for reminding me how much I don't like the weapon mastery rules. :)

D&D General [+] More Robust 'Fantasy Race' Mechanics for D&D-alikes / Redeeming 'Race as Class' for Modern D&D [+]

I mean, I think for a lot of people interested in these concepts, reinforcing humanocentrism is one of the points of play. I'm interested in concepts in the OSR space that try to split the difference; humans have an advantage in class versatility but other ancestries have unique advantages to...

D&D General [+] More Robust 'Fantasy Race' Mechanics for D&D-alikes / Redeeming 'Race as Class' for Modern D&D [+]

Another idea I've tossed around is using B/X style race-as-class combined with robust AD&D style multiclassing. So if you want to be an elf, at least one of your classes must be Elf. But you can be an Elf, or an Elf/Fighter, or an Elf/Ranger/Cleric if that's your preference. Human's big...

Why railroad when you can Borg cube?

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

You can replace “normal” with “non-force” if it makes it easier. In this context they’re intended as synonymous.

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

I mean, railroading as a term is "fraught" in the sense that it's generally considered to be pejorative if used to describe a particular game or gameplay. (I've argued against the term's use as purely pejorative in the past, but I do appear to be in the minority in that opinion.) Using a term...

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

I think there could definitely be different assumptions about how widespread knowledge of any one spell is within the greater setting. It is a 7th level spell, after all; players bringing in an assumption that possessors of that spell aren't common seems like a rational assumption.

I mean, obviously you're uncomfortable making new threads. :)

Let's talk about "plot", "story", and "play to find out."

I think you're misreading my post. I'm saying the rules exist to check "narrative contrivance". Transferring authority to the setting via rules (most especially rules that model diegetic elements) is the check on GMs and players creating new narrative elements based on what's currently...

Let's talk about "plot", "story", and "play to find out."

Let me quibble a bit (although I actually more agree with you on this topic.) Games with detailed, exception-based rules (I'm thinking of D&D spells here as a specific example) exist to establish concepts within the fictional setting that grant the setting its own authority, a presence that...
