    World of Warcraft: Midnight

Every once on a while friends drag me back into WoW. I want to like it. Love it even. The cinematics are amazing and the world building is really cool, but my gawds the gameplay bores me to tears. It is definitely better with other folks, but once a week for 2 hours (all I can budget given the...

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

This question underscores your position that there isn't a difference, so I am not sure there is much I can say to change your mind. A "core mechanic" is the system by which the questions that come up in the procedure of play are answered. Does that work for you?

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

No, that is the procedure of play.

What are you reading in 2026?

Also, I have started 1999: The Best Movie Year Ever and the nostalgia, it is like a drug.

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

Another system I appreciated a lot back in the day was Brave New World -- mostly because it was the first major game I remember seeing where doing "cool stuff" was a choice made after the roll, using extra successes. Prior, it seemed like most systems penalized trying to be cool by imposing...

    I will look into it.

What are you reading in 2026?

I just finished Scales of Justice by Ngaio Marsh for a bookclub/podcast thing i do and man do I not get the appeal of the British Mystery Novel.

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

I haven't because I am slightly intimidated by its total toolkit nature without having a solid example Cortex game that is easily accessible. (because licensing).

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

A core mechanic I am considering for my game that I will have to test is kind of a bastardization of the Ironsworn one: when doing something the player creates a pool from one of the list of their approaches, and one from the list of their stats (kind of like Two Column Fate Accelerated) and...

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

We used to refer to it as the Price Is Right system.

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

Another mechanic I really liked from the 90s was Fading Suns "roll high without going over" system. It was technically roll under, but the higher you rolled the more successes you got, as long as you still rolled under the TN.

D&D 5E (2024) Assassination on a PC yay or nay?

Assassins in numbers = mooks Solo assassin = OP threat More seriously, I wouldn't actually use an assassin or thief for that role in D&D. A cleric with the right spells is probably the most deadly assassin in the game.

Oh, cool. I had not looked at Sundered Isles.

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

A little background: I have been having some recent "wake up call" cardiac situations, which has motivated me to finally take some things off my Creative Bucket list. I have been freelancing off and on in the TTRPG space for 25 years, but one thing I have never done is design my own system...

D&D 5E (2024) Assassination on a PC yay or nay?

While I do not think there is anything wrong with the scenario in the OP, I am not entirely sure what the point was. Will there be follow up attacks that try and make up for the first attack's weaknesses? (like sending 2 assassins, or getting a PC alone?) In more general terms, this wasn't...

    Shadowdark: Stocking A Dungeon Example

The con is over and the games went well. Here is a brief report for those interested: On players and PCs: There were 5 or 6 players for every session. One player played all 4, and another played 3, and one played 2 sessions. Everyone else was a one off. 3 characters were played every session...

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

I disagree with all of this.

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

That is not a definition of railroadibg I have ever seen before. Again, the Deck is optional. Also, the player that drew the Void card didn't throw a fit. He rolled up a new character to play in the meantime. Like an adult.

    Shadowdark: Stocking A Dungeon Example

I am about an hour out from the first of 4 sessions. I rolled up.some details about and NPCs for the "tent town" of Luna that serves as the gateway to the Vale. The PCs will have contracted with the Cartographer's guild, which makes buying gear and selling loot easier, and gives them an unlabeled...
