WotC Why WotC SHOULD Make A New Setting

I can't believe you folks are still arguing about the definition of Urban Fantasy. In the completely fantastical world where WotC did make a Urban Fantasy D&D setting, I imagine it would end up looking more like Percy Jackson or Scion than Dresden Files.

Trailer Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Season 1) trailer

The pearl clutching has never ceased, but the Satanic Panic was a real thing that hurt a lot of real people. Midwesterners burning copies of HP was not a satanic panic.

Friday Fun: Your Formative Geek Media

I should add The Road Warrior and Hell Comes to Frogtown and other 80s B-movie apocalypses. I love the post Apocalyptic genre above all others.

Friday Fun: Your Formative Geek Media

I discovered them after I had discovered D&D, and after I had already read a bunch of adult fantasy. But 12 year old me loved DL and I still find myself stealing ideas from it to this day (especially the returning gods bit).

Friday Fun: Your Formative Geek Media

I was going to make this a poll, but I realized there were just too many options. So, what do you consider your formative geek media. it doesn't have to be the best, or even your favorite, but rather the geek media that had a real impact on your "geekness". Because this is EN World, of course...

    The Food Analogy

I forgot to say: I do like the ice creme parlor analogy, especially for something like a player driven sandbox. That is, there are lots of options and any given player is likely to find something they want, but the group is still going to have to try stuff only a flavor or two at a time. Maybe...

    The Food Analogy

That makes sense, although it is definitely more granular than I would bother going with. The thing about analogies is that they don't usually benefit from overthinking (because all analogies break down). You end up talking yourself out of the analogy, which seems counterproductive.

    The Food Analogy

I am honestly not especially interested in defending the basis of the analogy with you. If you don't like it, that's fine.

Is Nimble even out? I thought it was still KSing.

    The Food Analogy

Play to find out is interesting in the context of the food analogy. Korean barbeque maybe? Something where folks do a lot of their own flavoring and dressing and that often convinces other folks to riff on whatever thing you just did.

Looking for a good paladin example (TV/Movie)

Holden is Lawful Good, for sure, but I I'm not sure there is anything else about him that his "paladin like." His loyalty is not to an oath or an organization, but his found family and (often infuriatingly) his own moral code.

    Interesting. Thanks.

WotC Why WotC SHOULD Make A New Setting

I have a "Bright-like" setting that I have run at multiple cons and game days, with rules ranging from Monster of the Week to Savage Worlds, that I plan to use for my own RPG system when I put that together this summer. There is a lot of potential in bright, almost none of it realized, and so I...

    The Food Analogy

Another element of the analogy: Genres are flavor profiles, and like flavor profiles with food, we all have preferences and favorites. But even if we go back to the flavor profile over and over, there is still a lot of variation. A breakfast burrito is different than a street taco which is...

WotC Why WotC SHOULD Make A New Setting

For the life of me I can't understand why you are still trying to define Ravnica as Urban Fantasy when it is pretty clear Urban Fantasy is Buffy and Anita Blake and Dresden and The Dark Tower etc...

Trailer Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Season 1) trailer

An interesting thing about HP is that there is a whole world to explore. You could make a Hogwarts show that was set at any time within a thousand year period, and do things that are new and interesting AND have call backs and fan service. Why hasn't HP been "milked" the same way as Star Wars...

    The Food Analogy

The chef can make food no one eats. The GM can design an adventure no one plays. It becomes a meal or a game once everyone sits down at the table.
