The I'm not jealous of Gen Con attendees AT ALL thread

Me too, yay! Though my wardrobe for the next few days will be my four surviving old Gencon T-shirts.

[World of Greyhawk] Adventures on the river

LGG says the Crystal is pretty safe, so I would breeze by that pretty fast. It also seems to say it is not navigable as far as Chendl, but you could alter that or say they are on a shallow draft river barge. They will have to go down the Veng for a bit between Crystal and Ritensa. It is a major...

    "I hate math"

True, but in my last group, several players (independently) took derivatives while computing the optimal power attack bonus for any given attack bonus, AC, and average base damage. :) It seems to me like many posters think level 12+ D&D "math" is easy and fun; I'm happy for them. That doesn't...

Reverse Urban Arcana... OR: The Blood War just got a whole lot worse

The really interesting question is: why, really, are the gods shutting off these planes? Is there something the gods fear? Do they just fear what WMDs would do to them or their followers? Or maybe its something subtle like nearly universal, nearly instantaneous communication (radio, Internet)...

*Grumble* I'm supposed to be good at DMing!

I think all of us as DMs at some time have made the mistake of what I call "playing with yourself": having NPCs fight NPCs while the players watch. You must speed up those attacks, making them faster and faster, until you get the players' attentions back. You can start with rolling d20s and...

    Anyone playing NetHack?

Hours and hours? Try months. (Never even got the amulet, grrr.) If you value your time, please don't download Nethack. I'm pretty sure I could have finished grad school a year earlier if it weren't for that d@mn game. ASCII "graphics" didn't (and don't) bother me a bit.

    books dealing with summoning

The Book of Ebon Bindings for Tekumel/Empire of the Petal Throne really gets me in the mood for summoning, though the mythology is world specific and the edition I have has no game stats. Lots of gory, imaginative details about the rituals and roleplaying notes for the demons.

Do *Players* like to buy magic items?

For moderately powerful items, I like shopping for them. That way I can get the tools I need to survive in a hostile world and defeat the forces of evil (in other words, optimize my build). For minor items, like scrolls of cure light wounds, I just wish they would be there when I need them...

    Elves are Broken :p

IMHO, the D&D rules intend to award experience for overcoming challenges where you have a risk of losing something, usually your life, but at least some hit points and potions. If all you risk losing are some arrows while sniping at a doe, that's not a challenge in the D&D sense. If a deer is...

    3e Tools for PalmOS

Always glad to post replies on Palm topics :) Here is a good thread for die rollers: http://www.enworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=68838&highlight=palm As for character sheets, here are the ones I know about. Thinking of writing another one myself, soon, unless I get a job. Scroll down to the...

High Level Characters, Psychology and their impact on Society

I guess I can see how stable nations might deal with high level folks. I'm just not clear on how those nations form in the first place. So, in the beginning when the leader doesn't have any followers at all, why don't the trainer, spy, or researcher say "Why should I?" What's to stop the...

High Level Characters, Psychology and their impact on Society

Sounds like a good question to me. I think the answer is pretty scary, which makes for a very promising campaign setting. (Can we prove this has not occurred in the Real World!?) But how does the PF avoid detection while gaining power? In D&D, you gain power by overcoming challenges. By far...

High Level Characters, Psychology and their impact on Society

I think I agree that a nation requires individuals with high levels of those skills. However, while they are developing those skills, they are losing ranks in Listen, Spot, Tumble, Hide, Move Silently, Survival, and other survival skills, and not optimizing BAB, hit points, or spell use. So the...

    SRD for palm OS?

I would like that too. The only complete Revised (3.5) System Reference Document I have examined is Reveal's: http://www.enworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=57876 . It is not linked but the bookmarks are great. It does not have Palm tags either. The whole thing blows up to 11 Mb when brought...

Escape before collapse scene, how to?

Warm fuzzies to everyone who "stole" my ideas. They haven't been play tested so take care, DMs. 1-4 characters per round x 8 levels = lots of die rolling. Could be a long session, but it sounds like fun. Kyamsil, you've probably considered this, but do they have magic that could short cut...

Austin Games Day-January 24, 2004--Calling all GMs and players

I'm thinkin' 'bout it. I live a few blocks from the location so it would be a shame to miss it. I have a 3E Spelljammer convention game ready to go, but would also enjoy a more traditional D&D game.

Escape before collapse scene, how to?

I wouldn't bother marking the map, since debris will be falling everywhere eventually and it would be a lot of work to track the PC's movements on your map. Also, the PC's might end up doubling back to help companions or if they go the wrong way. Would the marked squares work the same way in...

    Palm OS die rollers

Like many, I prefer clattering plastic to flipping bits, but I have found Gamer's Die Roller http://palm.dahm.com/roller/roller.html to be easy to use and flexible when I need Palm dice.

    monster database

Does anyone know of a database where every SRD critter is a record? Access or csv format would be great, but anything I can hack is ok. I would like to do some analysis for a campaign idea I have, but data entry is getting old.
