Need help picking a great fantasy novel

In a couple of days I'm going on a 2 week vacation and I want to bring a couple of good books. My first thought was to get something by Jack Vance (who I asked about in this thread), but none of the bookshops I checked here in Copenhagen had any of the ones I wanted (either the Lyonesse series...

What Jack Vance book should I get?

In a week I'm off to Thailand for 14 days and I want to bring a couple of good books. I've encountered the name of Jack Vance a lot on these boards but have yet to read anything by him. What would be your recommendations? (1 or 2 books, maybe the start of a series. Preferably fantasy.) Are any...

    Critique my reworked core races

For my ongoing project of simplifying/reworking 3e, I've made some changes to the core races. Some of these are necessitated by other changes, notably to the skill system. As such, you may see a bonus to Alertness (equal to Listen, Search & Spot) or to Sneak (equal to Hide & Move Silently)...

    Why do elves trance?

Why is it, that 3e elves don't have to sleep? I quickly checked my 1e and 2e PHB, and I saw no mention of elves even being light sleepers. Is it to explain their immunity to Sleep magic? (Which doesn't explain why 3e halfelves share that immunity.) Did Tolkien mention something to this...

Star Wars teaser trailer up now

Sorry if this has been posted before, but the teaser trailer for Revenge of the Sith just got released a couple of hours ago @ Starwars.com

Dex bonus on ranged touch attacks?

So far, I've played it so touch attacks get a bonus from Str and so that ranged touch attacks get a bonus from Dex, as I feel it makes sense this way. But it just struck me that I don't recall seing a rule on this. Have I been doing it right, and if so, where's the rule?

D&D simplified: Do you really need Touch AC's?

For my ongoing project of simplifying the D&D 3.x rules, I've come to AC's. Is the touch AC really needed? For special combat moves like Grapple and Trip, I plan to just use opposed attack rolls so I don't think I'll need touch AC's here. For spells, I can easily envision how armor and...

Giving Paladins Planar Banishment instead of Turn Undead

For flavor reasons, and to further differentiate the Paladin from the Cleric, I was thinking about giving them Planar Banishment from UA p.67 instead of Turn Undead at level 4. Planar Banishment works as Turn Undead, but it affects Evil Outsiders instead of undead. On a successful check the...

    Turning Undead variant

Since before UA came out, some of us was discussing how to make the Turn Undead mechanic more d20-like. Some wanted it to be a Will save made by the undead vs a DC set by the turner, others (including me) wanted it to be a check of d20 +Cleric level +Cha modifier vs a DC set by the undead. I...

Should composite bows require an Exotic Weapon feat?

I'm not really sure I'd want to nerf archers this much, but doesn't it make sense to require an Exotic Weapon feat to be able to use a composite bow build for extra strenght? Balance wise it seems that some feats give less benefit than going from a normal to a mighty bow does. Flavor wise...

New idea for handling a Paladin's Remove Disease

I've seen a few mentions of the Paladin's Remove Disease being too weak and it's 'X times/week' mechanic being overly archaic, and I've even seen somebody say that it might as well be removed all together. But since I feel that it's one of the sacred cows that shouldn't be put out to pasture...

Castles & Crusades box set shipping to Europe?

Did anyone here from Europe, or maybe even Scandinavia, get the Castles & Crusades box set? If so, how much was the shipping? Btw, are there any representatives here from Troll Lord Games? I wrote you a mail a couple of days ago asking about whether you have any more box sets left, but have...

Critical stacking and feats - balanced? (Math-fu needed)

For this comparison, lets focus on the Rapier, the Longsword and the Battleaxe. AFAIK, they deal equal amounts of damage with their different damage die and critical threat ranges/multipliers. Now, let's say that Improved Critical and Keen only adds 1 to the threat range each, but they stack...

An idea for limiting the Cleric's access to spells

While I'm mostly just using the core books, I can see it being a problem that every new book with divine spells broaden the Cleric's spell repertoire. Looking over the Cleric's spell list in PHB, I came up with a pretty simple mechanic: A Cleric can learn a number of spells of each level = 20...

Review of Castles & Crusades Boxed Set

Just saw this at RPGnet. I haven't read it yet - just thought I'd share the link. If any of you know of any other reviews of C&C, feel free to link to them here!

    Streamlining advanced combat actions

In a couple of threads now, we've been discussing how to simplify D&D 3x to make it flow a bit smoother. It's my belief that a simplified combat system for D&D should do away with the AoO mechanic and remove all dependency on a battlemat. How would you go about streamlining the advanced combat...

    Random Casting Time for Spells

*Note: This is certainly not for everybody, especially not those who want their magic to be fast and reliable.* I've been thinking about what to do with spellcasting in combat, in an AoO-free system. In doing so, I've realised that the AoO's does little to hinder spellcasting, due to the 5 foot...

Slim down the core rules *how to remove AoO's?*

This thread didn't generate the traffic I was hoping for. I believe the reason is that most are happy with the RAW, and out of those inclined to change stuff (like myself), very few seem to agree on exactly what should be changed. So I'll try a new approach. Instead of making changes like the...

Ideas for a simpler D&D *mostly about skills*

Since this thread in General grew to 5 pages in about 2 days, I guess I'm not the only one with an interest in this. And since that thread was for discussing whether there was a need for a simpler game, this one is for putting up ideas for how to go about it. Personally, what I'm looking for...

Is there a need for a simplified D&D?

Recently this thread touched upon something that has been concerning me about the current version of D&D. While I can understand if most players prefer the game as it is, with it's many character creation options, combat options, etc (which just keeps growing with every new accessory), I really...
