D&D Solos - just not that threatening

Anyone have any thoughts about how the solos in the MM compare to custom-created solos that use the rules in the DMG? I haven't run any MM solos, but I created one using the DMG, and when I threw it at the players, everything went beautifully. I couldn't have asked for anything better. I did...

    Rules clarifications

I should note that "failing" and "whiffing" are different, but related, concepts. One can complain about the latter without complaining about the former. -Will!

D&D 4E Keith Baker on 4E! (The Hellcow responds!)

Ow!! ;) Really, all I'm saying is that the rules govern how the players interact with the system. If the players aren't interacting with the system, the rules don't necessarily have to come into play. Everything you say is fine, but don't worry about cats killing commoners. The players...

D&D 4E Keith Baker on 4E! (The Hellcow responds!)

Something that may be valuable to point out: The rules do not exist to provide us with "laws of physics." Common sense can do that. A given rule set may be able to double as a set of physical laws for the game world, but that is not why they exist. They exist to tell us, as players, how to...

Raise Dead: A nice big bone to the simulationists

Of course, we'll need campaign sourcebook writers to stop making every last one of their kings and such 17th-level fighters and paladins... :) -Will!

Raise Dead: A nice big bone to the simulationists

At the same time, I don't understand why this would have such dire consequences for so many people, if 4e did use a phrasing like Mr. Baker did. Probably has something to do with why everyone's inappropriately capitalizing words like "destiny," which, from what we've heard, affords the word...

    missing skills

I think if you're going to keep skills like that in the game, it's definitely one of those areas that needs siloing. Don't make me pass up Climb or Tumble just so I can have ranks in Craft (basket weaving). Also, don't make Craft cross-class, or anything dumb like that. -Will!

    R. Thompson : D&D still a sim/gamist RPG

Okay, I get you. I'm a little reluctant to bring narration rights into the picture when discussing the direction of D&D, if only because the very concept, IME, scares the living crap out of a lot of traditional players and DMs alike. The Forge has had plenty of threads started by nervous...

    R. Thompson : D&D still a sim/gamist RPG

What, you mean let's not bring Narrativism into this? :) Okay, I get you now. But I think you're talking more about narration rights than Narrativism, which clouds things a bit. D&D doesn't have them (i.e., only the DM ever has them), even in 4e (from what I can tell). The skill challenges...

    R. Thompson : D&D still a sim/gamist RPG

<hong>WHY DOES NO ONE LISTEN TO ME?!?</hong> Okay, then. How does adding degrees of success and failure add to the game's ability to allow players to address Egri-style premise? -Will!

    R. Thompson : D&D still a sim/gamist RPG

Hay guyz, I will be everybody's bestest friend if we can stop talking about GNS in these threads. All it leads to is Forge-bashing, which is a shame, because despite what your personal opinions of the forum or the model may be, it's helped a great number of people. And, since nobody 'round...

Design & Development: Warlord Article UP!

Hay guyz, On a related note, I know everyone hates The Forge, but I still gotta quote Edwards's Provisional Glossary: Sound familiar? :) I think 3.5 is typically played using FatE, and it looks like 4E will be typically played using FitM. But you can definitely play 3.5 using FitM, which...

    D&D 4E 4e - Is the Terminology the Problem?

Hay guyz, What's the point of having mooks if you don't tell the players which bad guys they are (or, in general, somehow make it obvious)? -Will!

Armor & Coins - please, No.

The purpose it served was to be expensive and reduce armor check penalties by one. No big deal. You can still put fancy armor in treasure piles and say it's worth more than usual. -Will

    Why Is the Cleric Unfun?

Protip 4: Killing your enemies more quickly so they can't hurt you more is almost always more efficient than just letting them get that extra damage on you and patching it up with cures later. If only more players understood this... :) -Will

    Why Is the Cleric Unfun?

Here are my thoughts on the matter: Before 3e, clerics had a choice when preparing spells: prepare cure spells, or fail to do their job properly. Players of other characters would lambast the cleric's player for not being a proper heal-bot, and, in fact, it might be that they were in the...
