D&D 5E Enhancing "Curse of Strahd" (and DDAL adventures)

YMMV, depends on your players. Personally, it was one of my more favourite parts, with the group only exploring about half of it. Inside the temple was fine, but they struggled with the Roc that attacked them on the bridge as they were leaving; one PC got grappled, crushed, and flown off with...

Eldritch Knight cantrips. 2 melee or 1 melee and 1 ranged?

You don't need str and int, keep 20 str, dump int to 10. Use spells that dont grant saves. I used war caster and arcane apprentice feats.

HExblade's specter: only temp HP or normal *and* temp HP?

Totally agree, it should be base + temp. Except that personally my Hexblade has never actually got to create said Spectre - very few humanoids in our game from mid level up, and now that he's got the Soul Cage spell, he'd rather use that (and has only once; level 15 now).

    D&D 5E Enhancing "Storm King's Thunder"

"Battle for the Undercity" is what I used part of recently - the Hobgoblin Revenant part, although there are two other components too, on a shared map. I believe it's free on DM's guild, or at least it was a while back via Dragon+. It's pretty rough, but served my needs well in terms of maps...

D&D 5E Would you marry a party member for +2 AC?

I reviewed this book, and they definitely cut out at least one spell that was way worse than this one, and changed some others for the better. I don't have my review notes anymore, so maybe it slipped by, or maybe they ignored my complaints. Often they will just cut something if I savage it...

    Dark Sun

I ran Dark Sun once (owned some 2e material, but never used it). From memory, I think I ran it during the 5e playtest days or maybe with 3.5, I certainly recall using the 4e stuff as well as 2e and 3.x for inspiration. I'm pretty much aligned with Eltab - when I ran it, no-one wanted to be a...

What is the status of Cormyr in 5e?

I agree, but it's the same problem we now get with Star Wars; once upon a time, a movie would stand on its own self-contained story, now it seems a lot of the plot is explained by the books / comics / cartoons you've never actually experienced. Some might call that progress, personally for me...

Graph Paper Romance: When D&D Characters Date

Great point re: different races, loads of my games also feature the classic Motley Crew of totally incompatible races who just happen to end up adventuring together. I've also flirted "in game" with a female player's character, whose boyfriend wasn't playing at the time (but is now). It was...

Graph Paper Romance: When D&D Characters Date

No, I don't recall any of my players ever being interested in PC-on-PC romance or suchlike. I've only recently played aside, and also DM'd, a real-life couple, and they have also never wanted to create any kind of in-game links between their PC's, which is good because I suspect some of the...

D&D 5E Bladesinger vs. Valor Bard vs. Bladelock

haha, I'm currently playing a Hexblade / Paladin (13/2)... it wasn't planned, it just happened over the course of play, where he eventually abandoned his old Patron (Raven Queen), and took up a new one (Erythnul) after proving his willingness to swap (long story, but kinda a bit like Elric)...

Dragonlance Dragonlance adaptation to D&D 5th Edition

I also have the original Dragonlance Adventures hardback, and used to own the initial novels, and I still have the original adventure modules (the first four are awesome). They came out in the reverse order noted, i.e. the first few adventures were written, then play tested, then the novels...

Dragonlance Dragonlance adaptation to D&D 5th Edition

I think anything that causes your character's abilities to rise and fall with the cycles of the moon is just asking for trouble of some kind (e.g. ask your wife). Personally I never liked it when they added it to the Dragonlance rules (late AD&D book?), and for me it's especially not in the...

D&D 5E Paladin: Why Are They Often Considered Highly Powerful?

Agree, Divine Smite as written in PHB is the only real problem, it easily leads to what I've heard called the "Crit Fisher" or similar, i.e. you try and maximise your ability to land critical hits, then use Divine Smite on your crit so you get double a large pool of dice. I'd much rather it...

D&D 5E Paladin: Why Are They Often Considered Highly Powerful?

Don't forget Sacred Oath, it's the "feature" that, from the very beginning of D&D and all its new versions (called different things), defined what it means to be a Paladin and not just a Fighter. Read PHB pg 85-86... from 3rd level, you are expected to be living and breathing your vows. It's...

    Warlock Eldritch Invocations

um... you haven't actually answered your own question. anyway... Playing a Blade Pact Warlock, specifically Hexblade, the best from my experience are Thirsting Blade and Lifedrinker - basically, no-brainers for a Gish. That said, it kinda sucks to have static bonuses rather than extra dice to...

    Mythological Figures: Baba Yaga (5E)

Don't forget Curse of Strahd, which has Baba Lysaga, or as my players quickly called her... Baba Lasagna!

Do you increase monster hit points?

If it doesn't feel right, adding HP doesn't solve anything, it just means the existing state of affairs will take a bit longer to play out, i.e. you're just adding Grind not Fun. Personally, sometimes I add more monsters, but I also change the rule where Monster "proficiency bonus" is...

D&D 5E A question for the 5e Experts about the Monk class

Agree 100%, as DM I wouldn't allow it, for that reason alone. If I was ever asked if someone could "mix and match", I'd still be hesitant, but I'd at least listen, although to be honest I'd rather just steer people towards using what's written, than having to deal with the balance of swapping...

Curse of Strahd Endgame Plot Help - Spoliers

Yeah, this is totally fine, sounds like your player wants to retire their PC, so you should let them. Personally my CoS campaign had a Warlock, who got too tempted by the dark side and ended up a Minion of Strahd i.e. an NPC, then that player ran the last couple of sessions playing van Richten...
