D&D 5E Is the Real Issue (TM) Process Sim?

The bottom line for a lot of us is that we played D&D a certain way all the way until 2008. During that time I'm sure others played differently. That was an advantage. Yes in a few instances over that time period especially with optional rules, we ignored stuff. The heart of the game...

D&D 5E With Respect to the Door and Expectations....The REAL Reason 5e Can't Unite the Base

    1. Refresh rate is very significant. It is far easier to avoid dissociative issues when a power is at-will. Easier but not absolute of course. 2. You are right. If you apply the effects after you hit or are hit then I agree it is dissociative. You should spend your CS dice either way and...

D&D 5E With Respect to the Door and Expectations....The REAL Reason 5e Can't Unite the Base

Well 3.5 D&D could be played OGL or not. It's not illegal to play with our old books. Pathfinder would not be possible but 3.5 D&D is possible forevermore. Same for 4e,2e,1e too. I'm not sure and I didn't say it was absolutely conclusive evidence. I did think the online poll was revealing...

D&D 5E With Respect to the Door and Expectations....The REAL Reason 5e Can't Unite the Base

What I found odd about it was that it matched my local gaming club's breakdown between Pathfinder and 3.5e. I just assumed Pathfinder had absorbed all the 3.5e players. Apparently not.

D&D 5E With Respect to the Door and Expectations....The REAL Reason 5e Can't Unite the Base

For me it didn't improve technically. Was it easier to learn to play? Maybe. But was it more fun to play for me? No. Not at all. In fact it's the only edition of D&D that I've pretty much decided to never play again. The explanation was the style of game. Obviously we all agree 3e made a...

D&D 3E/3.5 Ed Wars: 4E Fan Finally Gets 3E Fans' POV

Herschel, Obryn The only criticism I have for you guys is that you attempt to "argue" that issues people have with 4e are invalid. Keep in mind that we have an issue and that is indisputable. We give reasons for why we have an issue and they may or may not be 100% valid. So even if you are...

    Teleportation

I am always amazed at the belief that rules can keep DMs or players from being jerks. Jerkiness is part of their character. While you might over time change that, I really do think that "don't play with jerks" is the best policy. As DM, I don't even allow debates at the table. We can...

    Teleportation

I believe in absolute positioning for teleport. So a captains cabin can't be teleported into without knowing where the ship is at. Scrying is different. It allows the captain to be the target and that can show you his cabin but you still can't teleport there unless you know where the ship is at.

    Teleportation

Well here is my two cents worth.... Here is how I'd handle teleport Teleport starts out as caster only, 25 feet range, line of sight. This could be a level 1 daily. At higher levels, the range grows. But only at the highest levels does it span continents (18+). Teleportation Circles can...

8 Things About Monte Cook's New RPG

It's my opinion but I really think Monte is a notch above even the best designers out there today. And I don't think 3e is perfect by any means. But again that game was designed by a committee. If I could wave a magic wand and give ownership of D&D to Monte I probably would. Thats just how I...

    Top 5 RPGs--Spring 2012

Compared to any rpg game ever written except D&D, 4e D&D is wildly successful. I think compared to D&D pre-4e it was not. Thats just my opinion based upon WOTC's behavior towards the product and of course the sales figures we do have. And Pathfinder being 5% above or below D&D 4e really...

Kickstarter Too many Kickstarter projects? Is Kickstarter the new d20 glut?

It will be interesting to see how the wheat is separated from the chaff over time. Eventually the number (maybe it's now for me) will overwhelm people's ability to review what's out there. It will definitely lead to more discernment. I've participated in a few. I always ask myself the...

13th Age Discussion: A Love Letter to The Best Parts of D&D

There was a lot to like and I think some people will find it's mechanics very satisfying. I found some things interesting including the icon flavor. I may buy the game since I buy games all the time. I doubt though I will actually play the game. I'll steal ideas but stick to my regular game...

    Monte on Logic in RPGs

I love Monte as a designer. I am as excited as can be that he may design a game entirely himself. I know this sounds over the top but I've always felt he is the logical successor to Gary Gygax as the spirit of D&D roleplaying. I'm curious what he will do and what genre he will do it in.

4E Fans: Could 13th Age be your Pathfinder?

my guess is that 13th Age is high informed by 4e sensibilities but also by other earlier game influences. It's not either or.

Monte has left the building:How do you feel about the direction of the game?

I think Monte is the best or at minimum one of the best game designers on the planet. So his loss is bound to be felt. My pre-game optimism plummeted when he left. I will admit that I don't want an upgraded 4e. I want an upgraded 3e. I do though want a significant upgrade. Still. At the...

D&D 5E How are people currently feeling about 5e?

I went from being guardedly optimistic to guardedly pessimistic with Monte's leaving but to be honest I was always going to review the game itself when it arrives. I have vowed not to buy something that hits me like 4e. I love D&D and I wish it to survive but I also have to vote with my dollars.

    Optional vs. "Optional"

I've found as DM that asking players about their character concept is a great way to weed out the ones that won't mesh well in the campaign I am running. I've no problem with DMs laying the ground rules for their world. Race is a big thing. A good DM though will give as well as take away of...

    D&D 5E 5E Will Epic Fail If

If enough people don't buy it ;-) If the feel and flavor of that got lost in 4e isn't restored. Thats abstract I realize but that's how I feel.

    A Hope: Return Variability/Randomness

I like rolling but for me it's really more about what your non-prime requisites are rather than your primes. These are some methods I've thought of... #1 You get to choose any two scores and assign an 18 and a 15 to those scores. Roll 3d6 for the rest. At least then you get the smart or...
