Ideas are easy, everything else not so much

Faith of the Heart An ether ship has crashed a couple years ago on your world. No survivors, and the mangled bodies show they were certainly not of your kind. Your scholars have just managed to reverse-engineer a prototype. What's out there?

    Combat as a single roll

What about games where everything is at most a single roll? The Pool. Primetime Adventures. It's not like these are new ideas.

    What is *worldbuilding* for?

Thank you. Now I see. In that case setting can provide these: - Create save metaphors. Discussing racism might not be to everyones taste. Discrimination against mutants (cf. X-Men) can help. - Allow for exploration of fantastic situation. How is it to be a dragon rider? What if gods walked the...

    What is *worldbuilding* for?

The confusion over your choice of "world-building" is that making a dungeon would not normally be considered that. World-building is a separate activity. Like www.orionsarm.com. That's world-building. Making up a universe that works by consistent rules, their places, societies, histories etc...

Need some ideas for magic's return

What happened to the Elder Evil? Did it leave a body? That might have decayed, letting magic diffuse into the ground. Or was it imprisoned? It might have died there and when the prison opens magic is released. Or maybe new magic is imported from elsewhere. A new people from another world. Or an...

Elven language question (for linguistics nerds)

Have you tried "walk silent"? I have no idea what language you are referring to, but I guess those two words are more likely to have been coined.

For those who don't generally like to use Campaign Settings, what's your favorite one?

Heluso and Milonda, the standard setting for Reign. Special about it is the way magic works. Magic schools are very limited and integral part of their home culture. For example, in the Empire there is a group of mages who can form smoke into objects by waving their hands, called the Smoke...

    Laws in your campaign

An interesting thing is Law of the of the Land. While nowadays that's the standard way for law to work, that wasn't so in antiquity into the middle ages. What's the alternative? Every community uses their own laws. When a Saxon kills a Saxon in Bavaria, use Saxon law.

Cultural Appropriation in role-playing games (draft)

I just read the discussion and it was very insightful. I think Umbran is quite safe with his bento box. The problem with the term "culture" is that it has two seperate meanings. On the one hand is culture, that is the activities, practices and symbols a group usually engages in. Then there...

    National character

I think the notion of having superior values in your own community, had been common throughout history. Don't stick to the official name of the nation. Germans for example will usually appeal to European or Western values, although the of course mean German.

    D&D 5E How do I one-shot?

Don't do character creation on sight. Either have them mail you the characters in advance or you bring characters for them.

D&D 5E I thought about summoning spells too hard

In real world mythology, people will often give sacrifices to gods/spirits/whatevers while at the same time expecting that traditional sacrifices are enough. Prayer and sacrifice in such cultures are not pleading for divine help, they are more of a contract. So if you offer a goat on the right...

    Are RPGs Watchable?

Only in the sense of not being bothered by it. Of course, actors position themselves in such way that the camera looks at the interesting parts. That is true for Wheaton's Tabletop, pornos or just about any production.

    D&D 5E Impossible Ability Test

It doesn't matter, whether the character has ever been in a desert. A knowledge check might be impossible, if now one the character learned from, either directly or through books, has ever been in the desert. Even then a knowledgeable character might make an educated guess, and at least...
