Pathfinder 2E Play report (Extinction Curse spoilers)

It does force a more cautious style of play. But players can still stabilize right? Death isn't instant?

    Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder 2E's reception?

Personally, I find it engaging. My current game of Starfinder showcases a lot of the weirder things it's half-way to 2E design has. There has been quite a few "why didn't they do it like PF2E did", only to remember it was made a few years earlier. Also the product is much more digestible in...

    D&D 5E Legends & Lore 03.10.2014: Full-spellcasting Bard

Makes me curious if inspiration can have specific triggers or can you bank it during a scene and use it whenever...

D&D 5E What Books Would You Buy

Core 3, Psionics, Manual of the Planes, Deities and Demigods. Give me my classics.

    The problem with rogues.

As the author of those blog posts thanks. Mind you the Rogue technically can fill all 4 roles. No one class should be limited to one. Specialize sure. Each class needs unique ways to approach Make, Take, Talk, and Fight.

Rule of the Three (1st of May)

I guess it all depends on how themes are built. If they are a package of new powers/abilities AND feats combined into a whole that enhances a class. Great! If they are just a series of feats. Meh.

Increasing Out-Of-Combat Effectiveness For All Classes

A serious consideration needs to be taken on spells like Knock when they can be applied to say a wand. Any spell or effect that replaces the need for a skill check might need to be nerfed. Perhaps Knock is just a +10 bonus to the next attempot to unlock the door? Etc? The reason being it...

DDI and the future viability of Online D&D products

When it became a paywall for the Character Builder being updated with the seemingly endless weekly erratas...I gave up. What was the point. I don't mind them offering a service via pay. Like a virtual tabletop. But rules updates and character builders should be free to use.

Doing away with "Bigger Fish" problem.

It's a problem if you're trying to build encounters on the fly, and or you want to find something thematic to the campaign you are running. It would just be nice if the scaling rules to increase a power of a monsters were more thought out. Stuff like developing larger and larger encounter...

[Very Long] Combat as Sport vs. Combat as War: a Key Difference in D&D Play Styles...

The perfect option would be 5E with a d20 engine at it's core but a switch you can flip between a CaS and CaW model as needed in game.

Doing away with "Bigger Fish" problem.

Well, if the idea of complexity modules work for characters I don't see why not giving things like domain management (lair management) for monsters to allow them larger resources to handle higher level PCs.

Doing away with "Bigger Fish" problem.

Something hit me: Themes for monsters! In this case instead of something overly gamy as Solo or Elite you instead gain themes like Gang Leader, Expert, Warlord, Sorcerer, etc that work like templetes but don't just add generic bonuses to stat/skill. I'd LOVE to see monsters get fully fleshed...

    Gunslinger in core?

A Gunslinger Theme for a western magical campaign using D&D rules? Hell Yes. A full class? Naw, just give me a kit or theme.

Doing away with "Bigger Fish" problem.

The issue is you want to represent growing power without completely invalidating weaker foes, especially using teamwork against you. I would have caused it the Bigger Fish Dilemma, but there is more than two issues and options at play here. Flattening the math can help, but you also have to...

Doing away with "Bigger Fish" problem.

The problem as best as I can describe it that the accelerated curve of the math causes a very artifical inflation of NPC stats and values. So to keep the players challenged suddenly a higher level monsters turns it's interest to them, which sounds fine, but gets wonky when you want to deal with...

Doing away with "Bigger Fish" problem.

THACO did some interesting things to flattening the to-hit match, but I'm curious how you could reconfigure 4E's minion rules to avoid epic minions, but keeping the heroic tier deadly into Epic levels with a large enough number of them. Scale bonuses?

Doing away with "Bigger Fish" problem.

Keep in mind that hirelings and followers could be considered part of the PC's own power base, even if only tangently and are expected to scale with them. NPCs and critters not directly attached to the PC's however were in a void of development unless the GM took the time to rejigger the math...

Doing away with "Bigger Fish" problem.

D&D has always suffered from a weird issue that is a byproduct of level scaling. We'll call it "Bigger Fish" as reference from the Darth & Droids Summon Bigger Fish joke, which is a great illustration of the problem. The issue in a nutshell is: Foes don't scale with level, and neither do...

[Very Long] Combat as Sport vs. Combat as War: a Key Difference in D&D Play Styles...

Maximum risk adversion. In play, it the caster who always casts defensively, is stacked to the brim with status defenses, and has enough healing and protection layed on them to make battleships jealous. (aka. The Force Fields so thick you could bounce ping-pong balls of them.) Combinatino of...
