D&D 4E Making the Character I Want to Play in 4e (Long)

OK, if you don't like the fighter/ranger option, here's a (potentially) simple fix. Whine at your GM until he lets you take a home-made custom feat to let you SA with a greatsword. Also, I'd redistribute the stats to Str 16 Dex 16, since whacking stuff with a GS is likely going to be purely...

D&D 4E Making the Character I Want to Play in 4e (Long)

PrecociousApprentice speaks wisdom, my friend. I realise there's a great deal of history behind the roguishness, but maybe you should consider killing that darling. How about this: Human (fluff in som orc ancestry if you like, or go with whatever's in the MM) Fighter with Warrior of the Wild...

    Dragonbon are?

I voted marsupials, because, think about it, it explains perfectly the facts in evidence and is totally practical. The boobs are not, in fact boobs, but dual pouches. Great for storing your two-inch newborns, and general handy pouches the rest of the time. If you, as a player, want your female...

First house rule: Tieflings have small horns

You know, that's not bad. Melniboneans would be a very good fit for both the fluff and the crunch we have seen thus far. Beautiful, tainted warlocky bastards. Much better than the current batch that currently sit somewhere between monstrous (eyes that glow with hellfire, great big horns) and...

    Pronounciation of Justiciar

I'm well aware that all languages are subject to drift and all that, however: I'll take "Justiciar" over "Justicar" any day, because you can actually hear that the first word has something to do with justice, while the second one has to do with... cars?

    Is "Justiciar" the new "Rogue?"

That would be classical latin. In medieval latin, from the time of actual knights in shining armour, it would indeed be "Justisiar".

    Excerpt: Paragon paths (merged)

The specifically defender-like feature is the ability at 16th to mark and lock down enemies. Whether something like that can be multiclassed in earlier is current unknown, I believe. And I won't worry much until a week or so for now... ;)

    Excerpt: Paragon paths (merged)

Paragon Paths look pretty nice all in all, but one thing has me worried. Some of these things look sort of multi-classy, like the warpriest that clearly makes a cleric more defender-ish, or that rumoured PP that lets a wizard use a sword as a wand. You shouldn't have to wait until level 11 to...

    Long-Term Injury Fun?

I'll second that. Why focus on the sucky part of being hurt, when you could focus on the awesome? Simple variant: If you are reduced to negative hit points, you gain the right to wear a bloody rag around your head like a badass bandanna for the next week. Instead of grumbling about annoying...

    New point buy scheme?

...But even numbers give me an advantage that I don't have to either survive for four levels or screw my physique to take advantage of. What you give is a reason to ever take uneven numbers at all, IMO.

    New point buy scheme?

So, same old, same old? Disappointing.

    New point buy scheme?

I'm hoping they will do something about the point buy scheme. It's always bothered me that the bonuses increase at even numbers, but the price hikes come at uneven numbers. It disturbs my sense of game aesthetics or something. Looking at the D&DXP characters, when analysed by the old point buy...

    Tieflings

I can live with the name. And the concept is OK, if you want easy and accessible angst in your campaign. What bugs me is the disconnect between the fluff and the artwork. I mean, in R&C they are described as having "small horns and thin tails", but looking at the artwork, I see ginormous...

    Implementation of Long-Term Damage

Hitting the healing surges sounds good to me. Imposing conditions that will modify your bonuses to those d20 rolls could be a bit of a pest and could also mess with the carefully engineered math of the game, so sounds bad to me. For a heroic if not terribly gritty solution: If you've been...

    Ampersand: Sneak Attack

On the damage: If I recall the Spined Devil correctly, the numbers made sense if half it's level was added to just about everything except damage. Everything you added a d20 to, it just occurs to me. So [W]+Dex probably means just the weapon die + stat bonus IMO.

Spiked Chain: The Ultimate Defenders Wep or Sir Not Appearing in the Edition?

Personally, I'm hoping for Dwarven Urgroshes without that silly self-emasculation device on the bottom... Actually, I hope they get rid of all the silly weapons. Whoever heard of the legendary hero proving his Right to Rule by pulling a Spiked Chain out of a stone?

    Spell List vs Ritual List

My hopeful guess: Calling and bargaining with interesting beasties that can do interesting non-combat stuff, ritual. Summoning single beastie specifically for combat (and maybe checking minefields...), on the lines of 3x psions' astral constructs, per encounter combat power. That way a...

Wizards still cast Enchantment, Illusions, Necromancy

By "blasting", I mean magic with direct damage as the primary focus. Imposing status conditions, stealth and movement, reshaping the battlefield, and doing non-hp mind stuff are all fine examples of interesting and powerful non-blasty stuff to do. I don't mind having blasty stuff in the wizard...

Wizards still cast Enchantment, Illusions, Necromancy

And the rogue blasts with a knife ;) Seriously, one of the main functions of the curses seem to be increasing damage to the target from Eldritch ->BLAST<-. And "Your Scary New Friend", IIRC, mentions the summoning as "disembodied jaws" chewing on people, which sounds to me like very slightly...

Wizards still cast Enchantment, Illusions, Necromancy

Fair enough. But what we seem to be getting in PHB I is two varieties of blaster. Since they have been working on this for years, I think it would have been nice if they had come up with some sort of non-blasty magic class. It seems my wizard school campaign will have to put off converting until...
