Level Up (A5E) Rare variants of spells that don't have them

You can make a better version of Arcane Muscles by increasing the die size at levels 5/11/etc. so 1d6 to 1d8 to 1d10.

Dungeons & Dragons Has a New Home Webpage

I found the layout to be like the irritating layout I find at car manufacturer websites. It's very difficult to find anything useful and there's a lot of scrolling up and down.

Gate Pass Gazette Gate Pass Gazette Annual 2025 Is Here!

Backed! I'm glad I didn't miss it. The best part of the books, for me, are bringing them to the table and letting my players flip through them for fun. Sure, they can use the website or read my PDFs, but the physical book is fun.

D&D General D&D Evolutions You Like and Dislike [+]

Saying you found THAC0 impenetrable when it's a simple subtraction (or addition if AC was negative) contradicts being no slouch at math. ACs ranged from 10 to -10 for almost every creature and what you're telling us is subtracting or adding up to 10 was "absolutely impenetrable". But if you...

Then: die roll >= THAC0 - AC Now: die roll >= AC - attack modifier There's no difference.

Level Up (A5E) Simple question about Herbal Bitters Exploration Knack

Herbal Bitters is an Exploration Knack that does the following: "You can spend an hour to collect ingredients and brew two servings of a bitter drink that is potent for 24 hours. Imbibing a serving takes an action and reduces fatigue by one level for 4 hours." I'm DMing a large party of 7 in...

Level Up (A5E) A5E System Reference Document (A5ESRD)

I haven't received mine, either. I did make a nice PDF of all the creatures the Druid in the party can shapechange into, though. So I'm glad I got the pdf early. It's really great all of his Beasts are more viable at later levels. But one player keeps asking me about having cool pets so he'll...

D&D 5E (2024) GMs: How long should it usually take to go from level 1 to 4?

I started my current campaign at level 0 and level 1 PCs look like superheroes comparatively.

D&D General ENWorld is better that the pundits…change my mind

In a Level Up game I'm running one of the players didn't like his PC. He made a new one focused on having as high a Perception as he could manage (19 Passive Perception at level 3) and he also ended up with a really high Insight. Mechanically, he was a really good build. All of the other...

D&D 5E (2024) GMs: How long should it usually take to go from level 1 to 4?

I find 5e bookkeeping far worse. Every class has a million skills and abilities that work on varying amounts (proficiency bonus, ability bonus, something else) times per short/long rest. It's an absolute mess to keep track of. XP is quaint and easy by comparison.

D&D 5E (2024) GMs: How long should it usually take to go from level 1 to 4?

I started a game just about 5 months ago. We started at lvl 0 and I ran a modified N4 Treasure Hunt. In any case, the PCS have just made it to level 4. I think we've done 15 sessions in the last 5 months. Sessions are 4 hours at maximum but the usual playing time average is more like 3 hours for...

OSR Modules with the best layout & presentation

My choice was I3 Pharaoh. I don't think it's a coincidence that both were written by Tracey and Laura Hickman. As to boxed text mentioning monsters last - it was standard TSR procedure to do that in more or less every module they ever published.

OSR Modules with the best layout & presentation

I3 Pharaoh is fantastic. The layout is entirely designed for being run at a table and not an adventure that's organized to be an entertaining read like it's some kind of vacation guide. Here's random page (page 14) and you can see how each area is very easily keyed for DM use.

GMs: What is your prep to play ratio?

I'm retired now and have a gaming group of 5 (was 6 but 1 moved to attend college) with 4 players new to D&D. We are playing Level Up so they are even more clueless and so am I as I've owned the rules but never played. None but me own any Level Up books. So, I've spent a huge amount of time...

    Printing PDFs in Bound Books

Laser printer and a comb binder plus some acetate cover sheets. Not quite as professional looking but they do lay flat, and that's REALLY nice.

    D&D 5E (2024) Forgotten Realms subclasses discussion.

I am currently running an A5E campaign with modified rest rules and the martial characters, especially the barbarian (berserker), are terrifying. Only level 3 but I'm amazed at how good they are. The poor Druid and Cleric kinda suck.

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

I still have all of my cards but I stopped buying in the late '90s. The thing about having 12 multilands and a sol ring (no Mox) and the cards I mentioned is that they were cheap, cheap, cheap to cast. That was my mana and, I think, one City of Brass (from Chronicles).

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

I'm a nobody but I'll agree with Mearls. "The dungeon is the boss monster" is one of the most obviously true statements about D&D that I'm baffled I haven't read it earlier. Something occurred to me about D&D a few weeks ago. Your primary job as a player is to entertain everyone else at the...

D&D 5E (2024) If D&D 2024 Had Been Radically Different, Would You Have Stuck With 5E

Level Up also did this. As it's right there in the character creation section it's readily noticeable. It's probably my single favorite thing about the game simply because it effects every PC.
