D&D 5E Delve from Bob World Builder and Others

Sorry for reviving this thread, but I stumbled across it and had to jump in and defend our work a bit ;) But first – thank you so much for even showing enough interest to carefully look through the sample. I'm J. A. Valeur, founder of Eventyr Games and Bob's partner on DELVE. I designed the...

D&D 5E Running Rime of the Frost Maiden

Regarding overland travel and the dragon, doubling the overland travel pace (in the Wilderness, not on the roads between towns) is something I would recommend everyone do. A snippet about it from our DM's resources for Chapter 1: Ten-Towns:

D&D 5E Enhancing "Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus"

One of the questions asked most about this campaign seems to be: how to make Chapter 3: Avernus into a sandbox? Thus, we have decided to try to tackle that question. Over the last week or so, we've been pushing out a hefty trilogy of blog posts about running Chapter 3: Avernus as a sandbox...

D&D 5E Enhancing "Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus"

A bit of promotion – don't worry, there's free stuff in there too ;) We just published Bitter Rivals on the DM's Guild, a new adventure for Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus, featuring intense war machine combat and chases, avernian war lords and much, much more! If you've already got our...

D&D 5E Enhancing "Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus"

Now, this is a shameless (ok, there's always at least a little smidge of shape, I blame my parents for raising me this way!) self-plug, but we've created some cool resources we think might help you enhance your Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus campaign. At the very least, it should shave...

D&D 5E Enhancing "Waterdeep: Dragon Heist"

I've uploaded a document with DM's Resources for 'Chapter 1: A Friend in Need' on www.dmsguild.com. It includes thoughts and ideas on how to improve the chapter, a single page of condensed DM's notes, three more VTT-friendly maps (Yawning Portal, Zhentarim Hideout, Xanathar Guild Hideout) and...

D&D 5E Do you think the monk has too few ki points? And my proposal.

The monk is plenty, plenty strong at higher levels. Trust me. They regain the points at a short rest, for crying out loud. But, at lower levels, it can feel a bit underwhelming. A flatter curve is a better solution - like starting at 5 points and then not gaining any the last five levels, or...

D&D 5E I'm really hating Constitution right now

I've played around with changes such as these for a long time. A very simple solution, is the one you present yourself. Constitution Score + Full HD at first level. That has the added benefit of creating a more robust level 1 character. At levels higher than 1, you gain your average HD to hit...

    D&D 5E So Why Can't 5E Get a Video Game?

It's really tough to wrap your head around. 5th editions relatively simple mechanics and clear-cut archetypes and bloatless core frame is so well suited for a video game, that it's actually ridiculous that a real attempt hasn't been made. Sword Coast Legends was an abomination, that had very...

D&D 5E What if everyone moved, and then every acted?

I've also liked the idea of 'Engaging' enemies, and have been toying with figuring out how it would work. I think I would allow characters to engage one enemy for each attack they can make during a normal attack action (so martial characters would be able to engage two at level 5, and fighters...

    D&D 5E [5e] Modification of -5/+10 Feats

Whoa whoa, I didn't know I was part of a grand conspiracy! I can't claim to have the math either (or the time/interest to do it), but I saw it calculated, and it looked to be right. But hey, it's a free game - you can do whatever you want, I don't think the change will make the feat that much...

    D&D 5E [5e] Modification of -5/+10 Feats

I tried that fix too, once, but as people pointed out, lesser penalties/bonuses was actually kind of a buff, especially at lower levels. I think the easiest fix is simply to limit GWM to once per turn. That takes the edge off.

D&D 5E Removing the bonus action - analysis

Also a fair point. The more options included and the more 'min-maxy' players you have, the bigger issue stacking will be at your table. And if you have to make complex exceptions to curtail it, you will surely end up missing the simple bonus action. But, reading through the PHB, there's actually...

D&D 5E Removing the bonus action - analysis

I think that's fair to say, and I also think the difference is mostly semantics. I also think, however, that this system is more intuitive for newer players, who are less likely to feel shoehorned into remembering a bonus action they may or may not have access too. This is more: read your sheet...

D&D 5E Removing the bonus action - analysis

Removing the bonus action - analysis Okay, so recently Mike Mearls has sparked some controversy and conversation with his comments that 5th edition would work better without the bonus action. At first, I was skeptic, just like a lot of other people on these forums. But then, I started thinking...

D&D 5E Called Shots: Aiming at specific body parts rule and discussion.

That's actually quite reasonable. Kinda sucks for the rogue, though, which would presumably be really good at Called Shots. But surely something can be done about that.

D&D 5E Called Shots: Aiming at specific body parts rule and discussion.

I've actually recently written rules for Called Shots, inspired by how it was done in Pathfinder. I impose flat negative values, however, since I like how it plays together with advantage/disadvantage. The lingering effects are dispelled with Constitution saving throws, so that higher level...
