    Cantrip House Rule

A few observations: -This rule reeeeeeeeally assumes that combat is the only time a caster's gonna cast. Especially in that Tier 2 zone (which is one of the most common areas of play) where spell slots are still a semi-precious resource, this rule discourages casters from using slots for stuff...

Does limited resources affect a battle?

I'm playing in a level 11-13 game right now where the sheer number of resources we have available makes it hard to run out. Like, just doing some quick back of the napkin math here... -Sorcerer with 15 spell slots and 10 Sorc Points (Plus 1 slot or 2 Sorc Points back on Short Rests due to a...

First Impressions – Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage

At a skim, my first impression is that it's kinda dense but it also just looks really like...fun? It looks like kind of a good mix of dungeons with things happening in them to avoid becoming a rudderless grind, not enough moving pieces within moving pieces to become overbearing, and design meant...

    Memorable Beholder solo encounters?

With the acknowledgment that your party is going to hit a little harder than what Belchorzh is designed for, do they have ways to negate the challenges of the room itself? If I recall correctly, the floor is slicked, there's a big ol magnet in the middle that futzes with ranged weapon attacks...

D&D 5E Anyone else finding character advancement pretty dull?

I could go for an idea like getting an extra Skill proficiency when proficiency increases to make up for the broad skill gap between Bards/Rogues and everyone else, but by and large, I love the leveling up system here. I'd rather take 5 minutes to finalize my abilities and then go off running to...

D&D 5E Do you think the monk has too few ki points? And my proposal.

I played a monk 1-10 (well 1-7, and then a Rogue multiclass) in Curse of Strahd and never felt like I was super lacking in KI as a Way of Shadows monk. My spells were maybe a little costly at levels 3 and 4, but replenishing was just a short rest away. I think level 4 is a growing pains level...

Why doesn't the help action have more limits and down sides?

Out of combat, it's a way to have the group collaborate on a difficult albeit achievable task, and I'll allow it if the helper can describe how they've done it (I also have a player who will describe a few things they say or do, and then say "And I do that as a way to Help on this check," which...

    Playing Tieflings

Depends on what tracks as normal for your campaign. Most adventuring worlds include dragons, revenants, and devils, so a tail isn't gonna be that big a thing. And if so, you can work with the DM for a thinner tail or no tail.

What Official 5e Adventures have you played/run (POLL!)

I played a healthy amount of LMoP way back when me and my friends didn't know what we were doing, and I've run bits of TftYP. The CoS and ToA games I'm playing in are both climaxing near simultaneously.

Fluff, Rules, and the Cleric/Warlock Multiclass (WITH POLL!)

I answered yes, and think that the arrangement could be thought of as like, a NBA trade or something between gods and patrons. Let's say that an Archfey wants someone to act on their behalf on the Material Plane. That Archfey makes a deal with Torm to allow a few of Torm's followers to enter...

    D&D 5E Gear-Dependent Classes

Assuming you play backgrounds pretty straight with classes (i.e., no sorcerers with the criminal background), then I think most classes have similar gear dependency, maybe with rogues and rangers sticking out as being a little more dependent due to them usually being explorers and rogues using...

    D&D 5E BBEG Help

I'd caution against making her just flat out hard to hit since 1. Like iserith said, missing a lot blows, and 2. the whole challenge gets shut down if a PC Nat20s their first roll (I've had this happen before). If you want the mechanics of the battle itself to feel different without cheating...

D&D 5E Thoughts on this article about Black Culture & the D&D team dropping the ball?

Realize I'm coming to this thread super late, but still gave the article a read since as one of like, 2 black players I know, it seemed relevant to me. The impression I got from everyone quoted in the article is that ToA's representation is fine but colors in broad strokes under one banner of...

    D&D 5E PVP arena

Ah, gotcha. Break up line of sight by introducing some cliffs or trees into that spinning terrain area, so he can't be targeted and has a chance against area of effect spells? Or, you could give him a short bow (in which monks are proficient and @ level 5 get 2 attacks), so he can at least chip...

    D&D 5E PVP arena

True, it won't help much, but they'd have something. And a Monk at L5 has an extra 10 ft. of Unarmored Movement, so assuming your monk's base movement is 30 ft, it's now 40 ft. They can use a bonus action to Step of the Wind to Dash 80 feet, and then can use their movement and chuck a dart, or...

    D&D 5E PVP arena

What level is everyone? Because at low level, Monks should still have some throwable darts they can use as a ranged attack, and then they have some increased mobility later on in-game.

    D&D 5E Shadow Monk: Straight, or Monk/Rogue

Whoa, this is interesting. I'm in a CoS game right now with a monk who is building toward a shadow monk/assassin multiclass. Since we're planning to play through level 10, my plan is to do Monk to 7, and then add 3 levels of Rogue at the end. Right now, I'm at level 4, and while sometime I kick...

D&D 5E Preferred way to build your characters:

I said class first, which comes from one part "Huh, I wonder what it'd be like to play as a _____" and one part party balance, since the last few characters I've made have, to a degree, been made to fill a spot in a party.

D&D 5E What does it mean to you for a character/class to be "good in melee"?

I only really think of "good at melee" as being better up close than far away. Which I'd say covers highish AC, being able to dish out additional damage up front, and being able to reduce damage taken somehow someway (Parry, Uncanny Dodge, etc.)
