AD&D 1E What is the cost of one night at an Inn?

I just lump in living costs with the monthly upkeep

D&D General What version of D&D are you playing?

We started with UA but have mostly weaned ourselves off it after a few months. We found specialization breaking our game and the extra classes/spells not really adding much value to us. Im sure once we get really familiar with the core books we might change our tune. I did keep the +2 level...

D&D General What version of D&D are you playing?

Been rocking a 1e game for the past two years after about 4.5 years of playing B/X. prior to that I was running 5e since it came out until I made the switch.

    AD&D 1E Edition Experience: Did/Do you Play 1E AD&D? How Was/Is It?

Playing 1e as my rpg of choice for the past two years. It rocks!

AD&D 1E Snarf's Challenge: Was it Possible to Play 1e RAW? SHARE YOUR STORIES!

I ended up making my own combat document to streamline the text. Its not ADDICT, but leans closer to the OSRIC method of using the die roll to indicate the segment you act. It has some houserules, but there's a fundamental contradiction between the weapon speed rules and the attacking in melee...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

This is the crux of it. As much as I would love for the 1e style game to be the mainstream system (with the multitude of players and support that brings), the game hasn't been that for 25 years now.

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

I was countering the idea that item breaking was super common in older editions thats being tied to other opinions of having it happen on natural 1s on attack rolls. The saving throws were never tied to the user of the weapon, always against the user based on the circumstances and affected...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

People citing items breaking in older editions arent considering that it comes about in specific circumstances, and each item gets a saving throw with magic items gaining bonuses to such saving throws based on their power. It is a risk when faced with specific challenges, not a bad day with...

D&D General Radiation & nuclear waste

Two adventures come to mind for me, both written for old school dnd: Anomalous Subsurface Environment (scifantasy megadungeon with radioactive material that demihumans can see as "sick rock") Temple of the Beggar King (start of the adventure features a warning similar to the beginning of your...

D&D General Why do we color-code Dragons?

In my old B/X campaign that ran about 2.5 years during the pandemic the PCs fought against white dragons (2 adults), 1 green, and one black over the course of the adventure

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

I thought it was generally understood the DMG supersedes the PHB where it conflicts based on being published later?

D&D General Why do we color-code Dragons?

This thread does NOT need to delve in what roleplaying is or isn't, but this bar of 'basic roleplaying' being akin to method acting is bananas.

Well, they did essentially start as faction lists...

D&D General Why do we color-code Dragons?

Is that new? I haven't kept up with the 2024 rules and dont recall that in 2014. At first impression I feel like it still doesnt change the circumstances for a group with players that already have the knowledge, but for players/groups who are new its a good and simple way to feed that info.

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

The starting spells are randomly generated, nothing I've read in the DMG suggests the follow on level up spells need to be random. It  does need to be on their list of known spells, so random chance comes in with the percentile roll to know it to copy it in the spell book. So while you can...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

Unfortunately you missed the rule where MUs get a new spell when they level up as part of their training costs and downtime ;)

D&D General Why do we color-code Dragons?

No one, not even me, is saying that I think players are encouraged to go off and look up adventures and read the monster manual between sessions? I (and i partially feel responsible for kicking off this whole back and forth) meant to express that I thought pretending that characters didnt know...

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

I didnt think it was controversial to assume the GM by far does the most work in a traditional RPG like Dungeons and Dragons? I think GMs should listen to their players but I also think they end up being the final arbiter because 1) ultimately someone needs to make a decision if there isn't...
