1 charisma

Hmm...

Something I forgot. Lately I picked up an old character and played him in a group.

Character concept: Kinda medieval chinese wizard. VERY arrogant, noone thinks he's worth it, a walking annoyance clad in robes with long fingernails always rambling nearly incomprehensible about "uncivilized balbalians!"

I lowered his charisma to 4 I think... But gave him high diplomacy (which he uses only when dealing with other "chinese" ones...)

I used the Wu-jen class from Oriental adventures and till now the group thinks, my tabos are due to my arrogance, nothing else...

It can be fun. But I have to admit, it's always hard to find a reason why he joins a group. Or stays with a group.

I played him the second time now, the first time the group killed him. After he saved them twice. :) And told them about 200 times that they owe him for it.

That's how it's gotta be!

Here's the way I look at the difference of Wis and Cha:

Wis= Your ability to sense motives and understand your surroundings.

Cha= Your ability to interact with and manipulate others
(To actually understand how it is that you can do this you will need a "high" Wis. e.g. "She helps me because she is stupid" opposed to "She helps me because she is secretly in love with me.").

I tend to not penalize them nearly as much as other people I guess. I look at it as being fairly linear, not exponential (sp?). 1 charisma is a -5. I look at everyday transactions and chatting as taking a 10 in your charisma skill. IE, a 16 charisma paladin can be assumed to have rolled a 13 anytime they interact but you don't roll. Likewise the 1 charisma rogue can be assumed to have gotten a 5 on every roll. When he tries to convince someone of X they're always distrustful, hence the -5 penalty. If he rolls a 20 that's a 15 on his check, whatever you do for the Paladin when he rolls a 12 is what the 1cha guy should get when he rolls a 20. Those numbers exist for a reason.

Sure, it may be only one step away from being completely unaware and non-living but it's an awfully big step.

Also, let players decide what to be. If they have a low stat and allocate it to charisma let them decide what it means, don't decide for them.

I think that's the way to go. Charisma is a function of a number of other things, let the player decide what a 1 Charisma means to his character. Austistic? Obnoxious? Repulsive? etc.
