1 year of 3.5e...How has the conversion gone?

After one year of 3.5, what do you think of the new rules?

  • Vastly Superior to 3.0! I can't believe how horrible and broken 3.0 was!

    Votes: 16 4.0%
  • Better than 3.0! Things are better balanced and generally more playable.

    Votes: 234 58.2%
  • Neutral. Some rules are an improvement, others are detrimental.

    Votes: 105 26.1%
  • Worse than 3.0. Most rule changes were unnecessary and poorly thought out.

  • Terrible! 3.$ has really screwed up D&D!

    Votes: 9 2.2%
  • Other, please explain.

Mainly better although I still get confused sometimes

On the whole I think things are better. Power attack is still house-ruled to 3.0 rules and I still need to check spell descriptions or I'll end up using it as I remember it working in 3.0 - which might not be right either. I think the changes to the classes, especially ranger and druid, are good.

For those who don't like the paladin's pokemount, it can be easily changed back to 3.0 - although I had effectively already changed the paladin's mount in my campaign to 3.5 pokemount rules by turning it into a Figurine of Wondrous Power.

I think some of the non-combat spells got overly nerfed - esp. illusion - at least that's what the gnome illusionist keeps telling me - and yes he is still favoured class (illusionist) although he will probably be the last of his kind.

Weapon rules were a pain to change to, but now make sense - I think.

My two cents!

Glassjaw, my thoughts regarding 3.5 were my own opinion and were not meant to imply that those who used the books were "rich morons". I'm sorry if you felt the need to take them that way.

I stand behind my comments about the poorly tested "House Rules" and the hit / miss nature of many of the changes. If your gaming group is happy with what WotC published, that's great.

When the books came out, my gaming group bought over 20 (10PHB, 5DMG & 6MM) and jumped into the new rules with an open mind and desire to learn the new rules. After 2 months we realized that the changes we liked were few, while the changes we didn't like were many. From Buff's to Trip attacks, weapon sizes to Damage Reduction, half elf Diplomats to Gnomish bards and all the square monsters in the MM ... 3.5 disappointed us again and again.

We now play 3.25 having added a few of the rules from 3.5. But for us this latest revision was a flop, solely driven by WotC need to generate capital. This is not necessarily a bad reason and I acknowledge and support every companies need to make money and stay in business. I only wish they had done a better job and given us a better product.
