101 casting side effects.

Oni

Ok, one of my biggest issues with the sorcerer class is one of flavor, and so I like to do whatever I can to inject a little flavor when playing one. So lets create a list of minor side effects to casting spells different that might make them seem a little more mysterious. They should have little to no game effect. I'll start out.

1. Casting spells causes the sorcerer to experience pain.
2. Casting spells causes the sorcerer to experience pleasure
3. The sorcerer cries tears of blood when casting.
4. The sorcerer's appearance takes on a cadaverous cast when casting.

Buy Elements of Magic, for one thing. ;)

5. The sorcerer seems to grow taller and more majestic, as the magic briefly intensifies his presence and charisma.

6. The sorcerer spontaneously speaks in a foreign tongue that only he and his target can understand, but afterward, neither can remember the words.

7. The air around the sorcerer suddenly seems to grow humid, the air stifling, like breathing water. The spell washes over its targets like the incoming tide. When a spell's duration ends, it seeps away like an ocean's undertow, and for a moment, people feel like ther souls are going to be carried away in it.

8. The caster's face and appearance seem to shimmer, momentarily looking like those of an ancient and powerful wizard, whose spirit the sorcerer channels.

ummm....why would there be side effects? I think you are tending to describe wild magic, not sorcery.

For flavor my friend, flavor. I'm not talking about making a list of random things that happen when a sorcerer cast a spell. I'm talking about making a list of quirks that of which one or two might accompany a given sorcerers spellcasting. A sort of trademark to make each sorcerer more unique.

11. All light around the sorcerer grows dimmer for a brief instant.

15. The light about the sorcerer grows brighter.

16. Threads of shadow weave in complex patterns.

17. The sound of chimes and the scent of cinnamon comes faintly to those nearby. (the oldtimers should remember that one.:))

18. Bread tastes purple.

19. Thin tendrils of blood run down the arms from the shoulders to the wrists, much as water flows in rivers down to the sea. With the blood disappearing beneath the skin of the hands. This happens regardless of the position of the hands at the time. So when the hands are being held above the shoulders the blood in effect flows uphill.

20. Hair becomes tangled, clothes become grungy, personality becomes brusque and disagreeable, traps are laid for door to door salesmen… Hold it, that's normal for sorcerers. Forget I mentioned it.

20. Hair and eyes become lighter, eventually turning white or pale blue respectively.

21. Hair and eyes become darker, eventually turning black.

22. Life expectancy grows shorter, one day for each level of spell cast.

23. Life expectancy grows longer, one day for each level of spell cast. But aging continues as normal with the sorcerer becoming totally helpless on the day he was supposed to die.

That should hold folks for awhile.:)

24. An ethereal aura rises about the caster, within which the shadow of great wings can be seen rising from her shoulders - angelic, draconian or faerie, depending on the caster.

25. An ethereal aura rises about the caster, within which arcane symbols and diagrams whirl and align as he channels magic.

26. The caster's eyes are momentarily corrupted and she sees only dead and decaying versions of reality while casting. Eventually, the effects starts to persist beyond the casting...
