101 uses for a sword..

Hey all!

I am seeking your creativity!

In an upcoming game, I'm going to be playing a "swordmaster" style character. I see him as being a simple guy with simple tastes but a heavy believer in the "Way of the Sword", almost zen-like in nature, where he considers the weapon to be not an object but an extension of himself.. etc.

Here is where you come in;

I'm looking for things he can do with his sword besides combat. In the style of "a sword is not just a weapon, it can be anything you need it to be.." what else can you come up with? I'd be happy to hear anything you can think of, no matter how small. Ideas don't have to include RAW or any "crunchy bits", they can be completley flavour text or pure "fluff" or both, or whatever.

For the record, the character's weapon of choice is a greatsword.

Just to be fair, I'll start:

1. Balancing: Holding the sword out horizontally, it can be used as a balance pole (which may or may not grant a +2 circumstance bonus to Balance checks).

Read up about the Gurkhas and their knife culture.

The same knives they use for killing someone are used as kitchen utensils. They use them for everything mundane, and that is part and parcel why they handle them so well in combat.

So I would say the way to approach it is think of what a sharp object can be used. Look at a swiss army knife.

A greatsword though isn't particularly a finesse weapon... and those would lend to a few more uses.

With magic and special materials you could use the sword for wood chopping... something you wouldn't want to do with common steel.
