D&D 5E (2014) 15 Petty Reasons I Won't Buy 5e

I know it's just anecdotal, but no one I know personally likes D&D as their "favorite" game. With most of my friends it's a 3rd or 4th pick... it's just tended to to be the one game everyone in the group* didn't hate, so it's what we played the most of.

There are a lot of people out there whose favorite game is D&D, but I agree that it's appeal as a common denominator is key. Honestly, I know people for whom D&D is the only RPG they play. Again, I don't think the couple of Meetups and FLGS in my area are absolutely indicative of the whole world of gaming, but D&D games are always requested by players LFG and those games consistently fill and waitlist.

D&D is not my favorite game. Like your friends it's more like my 3rd or 4th.

For people with no meaningful knowledge of any other rpg, D&D is probably their favorite. Probably for a significant number of other people too.

My sympathies to everyone for whom D&D is your second (or third, or fourth) best friend! I gamed with such a guy once, and he ran his favorite scifi rpg for us when his turn to GM came up, but when we ran our D&D campaigns...yeah, I could tell he was in the group because fans of his game are so scarce.

Come to think of it, I have a new thread idea...

Heck, not being able to write a specific class name on the character sheet was an entire line of criticism for 4e.
Oh, that's right! The wails over being deprived of the bard, the barbarian, and last but not least, the bardbarian! I also remember quite a few bewailments over 4e's original race line-up. "What, no half-orcs in the PHB1?! Oh, the travesty!"

It's funny, literally everything you listed, with the exception of #13, is a reason I'm looking forward to 5E.
Well, at least we can agree on the important things. ;)

No that was 4e. The Mistophecy for 5e is, "You might check out the free Basic PDF, and see what you think..."
Wow, the Oracles are really hedging their bets this year aren't they?

Central Florida is a weird city... If I had to rate RPGs in terms of popularity this is the list I'd give:

#1 - Pathfinder - The FLGSes that have sit in games, this is the second most popular game played their immediately after M:tG.
#2 - White Wolf's Storyteller/Camarilla Vampire LARP - We have almost 1000 Cammies in central florida... thankfully they don't all ever show up at once (we've hit LARP numbers in the 300-400's though). I'm rating this one second because a large number of Cammies I know here play at least one Pathfinder/OD&D clone game per week as well as Cam LARP.
#3 - Shadowrun - this is the other sit down game I occasionally see at the FLGS.

My current group are all GURPS fans so I'm set. Except that FATE has wormed it's way inot my heart... so I'm trying to get them to try that game out. It's a tough sell though.

Oh, it's cool. As long as it's a decent DM I enjoy D&D well enough. I just tend to play weird 'builds' these days.

Here comes the pettiest reason ever.

Long time on-and-off player of mine. "Nah, 5e sucks because what they did to the paladin. A paladin has to be lawful good and follow a strict set of divine rules."

Confused stare from the rest of us. "But we houseruled in NG and CG paladins a long time ago."

"Yeah but those are houserules! Now it's going to be official!"

Communal facepalm from everyone else in the shop, not only my group.

Oh and that player recently played a CG paladin. For about 5 month.
