16 plastic D&D figures @ $2.50

So it's interesting that they actually ARE D&D figures. Those are from the old Dragonstrike game. They're not bad, but not great. Maybe worth 2.50. I wonder where they got them from, though. Presumably, they've got a bunch.

Huh, I saw someone at GenCon that had a whole bunch of these in a clearance bin underneath their table. I didn't know what they were, and just passed over them.

I love Science & Surplus, a store full of crap at very low prices. I don't go often, but when I do, I spend at least an hour in the store.

Thanks for the picture, Kae Yoss! I would have done that, but my digital camera is not cooperating...

Anyway, that pic shows both the Teal set (foreground) and the Grey set (background). The Teal is still available, but apparently the Grey set is sold out (except in the store). So you just get the Axmen, Swordsmen, and Troll; no Gargoyles, Stone-throwing Biant, nor Giant Skeletons...

I got two sets of each, back around new year's, kept one of each, and am sending the rest to my friend and his kids (along with some other stuff for them, him, and his wife) as sort of a late Christmas present... While I was at it, I thought maybe some of you guys might be interested, too, so I went to their web site, and posted a link.

They also have figurines from the Buck Rogers game, so I suspect that these weree acquired in a sell-off of old TSR products, somewhen. Maybe WotC sold them off, I don't know.

Anyway, buy'em if you want, or don't. I don't get anything out of it if you do. I just thought, maybe, some of you might be interested! There have been lots of threads, lately, about people looking for cheaper alternatives to WotC miniatures... I don't think that this deal will be beaten, any time soon! :p

The funniest thing, to me, is that the ad that I ordered from listed the Troll as a "yeti", and the gargoyles as "griffins"! Whoever these AS&S Geeks are, they surely don't play D&D!

From my memory of the Dragonstrike game, the axemen are supposed to be bugbears and the swordsmen are goblins (but are unspecific enough that you could use them for whatever you wanted).

NOW WHAT DOES THAT REMIND ME OF?

You're welcome. It was the picture from their page (before someone will praise - or curse - me because of that background.

Well, they're not painted.... And I'm one of those fortunate bastards who has a Hero Quest game from back when it was widely available. There's a good supply of critters :)

... or relate to fantasy at all. I cannot blame them for not recognizing the D&D troll (it's quite different from other trolls), but it doesn't really look like a yeti. And that gargoyle/griffin affair is even worse. I mean, come on... :D

Ran into this:

*Note: American Science & Surplus requires a minimum purchase of $10.00 merchandise not including shipping and handling charges. You have not yet reached the $10 minimum. Please increase your merchandise total by purchasing more incredible stuff!

I believe these are usually among the quirky items offered at the Gamescience booth. I've picked up a few at GenCon to use for Cheapass games, and Gamescience sounds right.

Bingo! That's where I saw them. Thanks for the memory jog.
