1st Edition Rangers in 3.x E?

PHB2 has an optional rule where you can exchange your animal companion for the ability to make a hit count an opponent as flanked for one attack (or for one round, whichever happens first).

Cool. But I think I'd rather just drop that Class Ability (Favored Enemy) for a bonus feat.

Is that fair? And if so, is the whole Favored Enemy progression for one Feat (seems about right to me), or each Favored Enemy = 1 feat?

There's a regional feat in FR that gives you a favored enemy. Since regional feats are supposed to be a little better than most feats (but you can only have one, and you must take it at first level), I'm thinking that trading each favored enemy for a feat is about right. I might limit the bonus feat to a list of potential feats, though.

Here's a summary of my 3e ranger. Keep in mind we still play 3.0e, or rather, 3.11 for worgroups:

BAB as fighter
Saves, good fort and will, poor ref.
Uncanny Dodge at 2nd level

Table 3-4: The Ranger

Skill points per level -4
Class skills, same as phb, plus Knowledge Arcana and spellcraft.

Spells: 0-3 druid spells, 0-2 magic user spells. In my games, I don't use the paladin or ranger spell lists, any ranger/paladin spell that is on the druid/cleric list is available at the level on the druid/cleric list. Any ranger/paladin specific spells are druid/cleric spells and available for druid/clerics (respectively) as well.

Special Enemy - giant class creatures, ala 1e
Scry - at 10th level, scry becomes a class skill for the ranger.
Greater Camoflauge - Hide in Plain Sight

Apologies for the crappy formatting.

More Combat styles - These do exist, there were some in a recent Dragon mag, and a number of them in a book called Wildscape {highly recommended for any outdoorsy campaign}, as well as a recent pdf by The Le.

A HR thread which may have been lost to the crash {damn, sounds like a Paranoia game....post-Ooops :) } covered a bunch of options as well. Flavoring this aspect of the Ranger can make for some interesting, non-Dritzz characters.

.. I would also suggest the Barbarian approach, but thats more due to being stingy with bringing in new material :)
Easier to tweak the Core class a bit than leave through tons of books to figure out what a classes special ability does.

I think 1 Favored Enemy = 1 feat, no increases. But I give feats all but 3 levels, so YMMV.
