Currently, I'm DMing a group of friends through WotC's Adventure Path series. We haven't RP'd in a number of years, so it seemed like a good way to get back into the swing of things and learn 3E's rules.
During our session last night a question/comment arose about the fact that through the years I've been DM, I have the PC's start off at 1st level typically. My player's think this is not the norm for most D&D players. Now, I'm not disagreeing with them, but I wanted to know: what do you all do? Start at first level or higher?
On a related note, my players also think its odd that when they gain levels, they get the number of HP on the die they roll (even if the roll is low). Now keep in mind, when I roll up monsters, they also get whatever I roll (even if its low). Again, is this odd for you guys? Do you let your players reroll low numbers?
PS note: Since this is a Hack n' Slash campaign, I do my rolls in the open and let 'em lie where they are. In a more story based campaign I'm apt to do an occasional DM fudge
