2013 Body Count

Didn't see this year's version, so I'll start.

9th level, 4e. The Goblins of Eberron campaign. Arena combat for the right to talk to the Daughters of Sora Kell in Droaam.

3 PC deaths. Near TPK.

7 PCs vs Beholder, 2 stone giants and 4 gricks. Very hard encounter. Two additional terrain features that were neutral. A rolling pendulum trap that hit and pushed everything in its path, and Infernal Fumes, which randomly move, and daze and damage. Also, the stone giants had magic lenses that turn Beholder rays into Blast 5 attacks.

Tuktuk the wizard was low on hp (something like 2 hp) when the stone giant decided to sweep, doing 30 out of a possible 31 damage, killing him when the ongoing damage hit on his turn.

Skud the runepriest fought with a giant and some gricks, while getting hit by the pendulum, Beholder Blasts, and infernal fumes. He ended up failing 3 death saves.

Travock the warpriest got in the Beholder's face early, got dropped, failed 2 death saves, got a healing potion, jumped up, started Stream of Life to heal the rest of the party, got hit with the Beholder's Terror Ray and ran into the path of the pendulum trap. Then the ongoing damage from Stream of Life dropped him, and he failed his 3rd death save.

Down 3 PCs, with 3 others unconscious, the last man standing Skuurj the cavalier/binder hybrid gave Krusk a potion so Krusk could use his Immediate Interrupt power to give Skuurj a +4 on his intimidate so he could get the Beholder to surrender! With it's 25 Will and the +10 for Intimidating in combat and the +4 from Krusk, Skuurj needed to roll a 14, which he got exactly! Huzzah!

2013 saw the death of Bouleau, 5th level dwarven druid in the Rise of the Runelords adventure, cleaved in two by his comrad who was convinced that he was a doppleganger. His leafy antics will be missed.

Aedh the cleric, 7th level. While busting into our own headquarters after learning a shapeshifter was impersonating at least 2 party members, we were ambushed by phase tigers when Aedh peeked behind a curtain that we didn't put up.

From my D&D Next Campaign, we had a death.

Handmaiden Meriele Amastacia climbed up the mountain with her peers, intent on doing battle with the griffons who nested there. The whole party was ravaged in the encounter, but only the Handmaiden bled out before help could reach her. She will be missed.

Yet another death in the Rise of the Runelords adventure path (my 6th so far): We say farewell to Malachai, 6th level Inquisitor, trapped and skewered between two faceless stalker rogues.

May Abadar accept his righteous soul.
